Sutter Health seeks a visionary, relationship-driven, and entrepreneurial leader to serve as its next Vice President, Chief Administrative Officer, Medical Education (CAO). This is a rare opportunity to help shape the future of medical education within one of the nation's most respected integrated healthcare systems, at a pivotal moment of growth and transformation. The successful candidate will play a defining role in advancing Sutter Health's academic mission while helping build the physician workforce, educational programs, and infrastructure needed to meet the evolving healthcare needs of Northern California and beyond.
As one of the largest not-for-profit health systems in the United States, Sutter Health serves more than 3.6 million patients through an extensive network of hospitals, ambulatory care sites, physician organizations, and community-based services. The organization is widely recognized for its commitment to high-quality, patient-centered care, innovation, research, and health equity. Supported by an ambitious strategic vision, Sutter is investing in the future of healthcare through the expansion of its academic enterprise, creating an environment where education, clinical excellence, discovery, and workforce development are fully integrated.
This position offers the opportunity to help build something truly transformational. Sutter Health is creating a comprehensive academic ecosystem that spans undergraduate medical education, graduate medical education, faculty development, physician workforce strategy, and clinical education. Central to this vision are two rapidly expanding pillars: the development of the Mark & Mary Stevens School of Medicine, established in partnership with Santa Clara University, and the significant growth of Sutter's graduate medical education enterprise. Sutter has made GME a strategic priority, expanding to 34 residency and fellowship programs across multiple communities, training more than 520 residents and fellows annually, and pursuing an ambitious goal to substantially increase the physician workforce through continued program growth and innovation.
Together, the new medical school and expanding GME portfolio reflect Sutter's commitment to reimagining the full continuum of physician training. Through innovative curricula, technology-enabled learning, interdisciplinary collaboration, community-based clinical experiences, and a deep focus on whole-person care, Sutter is building an integrated academic model designed to develop the next generation of physician leaders while improving access to care and health outcomes for the diverse communities it serves.
The CAO will serve as the senior administrative leader responsible for translating Sutter Health's ambitious academic vision into operational reality. This individual will work in a close administrative-physician dyad partnership with the System VP, Chief Academic Officer, who serves as the senior academic physician executive overseeing medical education, research, and academic program development across the enterprise. The CAO will report to the ExecutiveVice President, Sutter Health and President, Sutter Health Network, who provides executive leadership and operational oversight to advance Sutter Health's academic and research mission and long-term educational strategy.
The successful candidate will have a unique opportunity to bring deep their deep academic leadership experience to influence the future physician workforce pipeline by strengthening connections across medical student education, residency and fellowship training, faculty development, and physician recruitment and retention. They will lead efforts to create an integrated learning environment that not only develops exceptional clinicians, but also prepares future healthcare leaders, innovators, educators, and researchers.
For leaders who are inspired by the opportunity to leave a lasting impact on the future of medical education and healthcare delivery, few opportunities offer the scale, visibility, resources, and transformational potential of this role. The next CAO will have the chance to help build one of the nation's premier integrated academic health enterprises while shaping the educational experiences of generations of future healthcare professionals.
