DESCRIPTION


Otterbein University is seeking an engaged and student-focused Assistant Director of Student Conduct & Residence Life to support student success through conduct processes, residential community leadership, and student development initiatives. This position plays a key role in fostering a safe, inclusive, and educational campus environment while serving as an Area Director for approximately 700 students living in residence halls, apartments, and houses.

The Assistant Director collaborates with campus partners to support student conduct, oversee residential staff, and lead programming that promotes community development, student retention, and holistic student well-being.

This is a live-in, full-time, exempt administrative position working 40 hours per week, 12 months per year.

RESPONSIBILITIES


Student Conduct

  • Train student conduct hearing boards in collaboration with the Dean of Students/Director of Student Conduct.
  • Serve as a student conduct hearing officer and/or coordinate student conduct or appeals hearing boards.
  • Maintain accurate student conduct records.
  • Participate in Clery, Title IX, and other student conduct-related training sessions throughout the year.
  • Participate in the Otterbein Coordinated Community Response Team (CCRT).
  • Participate in the annual Campus Life Handbook review process.

Staff Supervision, Training & Selection

  • Select, train, supervise, and evaluate resident assistant and/or hall director staff.
  • Direct residence life paraprofessional staff recruitment, selection, training, enrichment, recognition, and evaluation processes.
  • Participate in an on-call rotation.

Student Intervention, Support & Programming

  • Address student behavior, including reporting violations of the student code of conduct, interpreting policies, and serving as a judicial hearing officer.
  • Lead retention efforts by planning educational programming, meeting individually with at-risk students, and training paraprofessional staff to address retention concerns.
  • Manage residence hall programs in collaboration with hall staff, emphasizing community development, critical thinking skills, healthy lifestyles, and residence life learning outcomes.
  • Plan, promote, and evaluate collaborative programs with academic departments.
  • Support students experiencing personal, social, emotional, physical, and academic concerns through programming and referrals.
  • Serve as an advocate for diverse student populations.

Facility Supervision

  • Supervise hall facility operations, including opening and closing, key management, furniture inventory, and monitoring cleanliness and maintenance.
  • Manage break housing and theme house programs, including facilities, selection processes, and resident needs.

Housing Operations

  • Plan housing selection, room assignment, and room change processes, including publicity and evaluation.
  • Develop Residence Life marketing and social media materials.
  • Maintain accurate student information in Banner.

Budget Management

  • Supervise area programming, staff development, and facility budgets.

Campus Involvement

  • Participate in campus committees as part of the Otterbein community.
  • Maintain open communication with campus constituents and support the developmental needs of students.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervise hall director and resident assistant staff as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS


Education & Experience

  • Master's degree required.
  • 2-3 years of experience in residence life, student conduct, educational programming, supervision, or advising.

Certifications & Licenses

  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Willingness to become a university-certified driver.

Skills & Competencies

  • Ability to understand and work with individuals from diverse nationalities and backgrounds.
  • Basic math skills and ability to use Excel and a calculator for budget management and housing projections.
  • Strong technical skills, including proficiency with software applications and office equipment.
  • Ability to work effectively with a variety of personalities and make timely decisions in dynamic situations.
  • Strong reasoning and problem-solving skills, including evaluating solutions and approaches.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The role involves sitting for extended periods, frequent interaction with students, faculty, and staff, and occasional physical activity including loading and unloading supplies. The employee must be able to lift up to 20 pounds, walk up to four flights of stairs, and reach above head and below knees. Regular and predictable attendance is required.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed primarily in an environmentally controlled office setting and within residence halls. This position requires living in a furnished on-campus apartment provided by the University.
