Visiting Assistant Professor in Educational Psychology

The Department of Educational Studies (www.edst.purdue.edu) at Purdue University invites applications for a one-year on campus Visiting Assistant Professor position in Educational Psychology to begin in August 2027, with the potential for extension for a second year. The ideal candidate will have scholarly and applied interests in educational psychology, with a focus on cognition, learning, development, and/or motivation contextualized in educational settings, such as classroom and/or informal learning environments.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate is expected to:

  • Conduct research and build their educational psychology-relevant scholarship.
  • Contribute to the educational psychology graduate program area course needs by teaching courses in areas such as educational psychology, personal and social development, cognition in learning contexts, culture and cognition, and/or courses in line with their expertise, including graduate seminars and special topic seminars (2-2 course load).
  • Mentor master’s and doctoral students in their area of expertise.
  • Engage in other College of Education (COE) activities as appropriate, which might include forming collaborations with faculty, attending speakers’ series, and contributing to program area and departmental activities and meetings.

Preferred and Required Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum qualifications include a Doctorate in educational psychology or a closely related area by the position start date (e.g., Learning Sciences, Applied Developmental Psychology).
  • Candidates who are ABD will be considered, but they must have their doctoral degree conferred prior to starting in August 2027.
  • Research experience and interests relevant to educational psychology, which might include topics such as learner cognitive development, teacher quality, learner scaffolds, self-regulated learning, collaborative processes, identity, among others.
  • Previous and sustained engagement in research as evidenced by publications, conference proceedings and presentations, and experience with a variety of research projects.
  • Prior experience in teaching educational psychology-relevant courses within undergraduate and/or graduate preparation programs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Excellent communication skills and demonstrated collaborative experience.
  • Experience mentoring undergraduate or graduate students in research.

The Faculty of the Educational Psychology and Research Methodology program area are committed to advancing knowledge through their scholarship and preparing scholars to be leaders in research that addresses significant educational and psychological problems. Our internationally recognized faculty members offer students strong, individualized mentoring and opportunities to develop their skills to design and conduct research. The Educational Psychology program offers a Ph.D. in Educational Studies with a concentration in Educational Psychology and Research Methodology, and a Master of Science with a concentration in Educational Psychology and Research Methodology. Both are residential programs.

The successful candidate would be welcome to participate in the COE’s faculty mentoring program and receive mentoring from senior faculty.
