Classification Pay Scale
In compliance with SB 1162, Western University of Health Sciences is providing a pay scale for this position. The pay scale reflects the minimum and maximum target for new hire salaries for this position. Within this range, the individual pay is determined by a variety of factors, including but not limited to job-related skills, experience, relevant education or training, and work location. Please note that the compensation details listed reflects the base salary only.

Expected Pay Scale
Minimum: $30.97 Hourly
Maximum $30.97 Hourly

Job Summary
Under direction of the Director, the Alumni Tutor will work regularly with cohort in either large group course-specific reviews or smaller group of 10-15 students through the LEAD Tutorial Assistance Program (TAP). The large group reviews will be presented at minimum two times per month, typically before an exam. The smaller groups are a tutoring intervention for students in academic difficulty or formal Academic Probation. 

Additionally, the Alumni Tutor may work with incoming students through LEAD's Summer Preparedness and Readiness Course (SPaRC) by providing overviews of traditionally difficult courses. The Alumni Tutor will supply effective facilitation in a manner improving at-risk students' academic skills while developing mastery of subject material. Student independence rather than tutor dependence will be the emphasis of the Alumni Tutor. This position will also adhere to LEAD TAP guidelines as well as follow LEAD documentation policies and procedures.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge:

  • Masterful understanding of assigned academic subjects to effectively support students in developing mastery of course material.
  • Knowledge of tutoring strategies, learning theories, and facilitation techniques that promote student independence rather than tutor dependence.
  • Working knowledge of virtual learning platforms and online communication tools used for remote tutoring and large‑group review sessions.
  • Familiarity with institutional academic support services, policies, and procedures relevant to the LEAD Tutorial Assistance Program (TAP). 


Skills:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively with faculty, staff, students, and external contacts.
  • Skilled in planning, preparing, and delivering large‑group review sessions both virtually and on campus.
  • Strong skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Google Docs, and other required software programs.
  • Capable of managing multiple tutoring groups, preparing materials, and maintaining accurate session records. 

Abilities:

  • Ability to guide small groups of 8–15 students through structured tutoring sessions that enhance comprehension and academic performance.
  • Ability to mentor new tutors by modeling best practices, offering guidance, and supporting their professional development.
  • Ability to motivate and engage students in active learning, fostering independence and confidence.
  • Ability to conduct tutoring sessions in both virtual and on‑campus environments, adjusting methods to meet student needs.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with program staff, faculty, and fellow tutors to support program goals.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks, manage tutoring schedules, and prepare materials efficiently.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, demonstrate reliability, and uphold high standards of conduct in all interactions.

Required Qualifications
Education:

  • Terminal Professional Degree required.
  • Earned “B's” or higher in all WesternU course(s) to be considered for the tutor position.


Experience:

  • Good relationships with WesternU faculty.

Essential Job Duties
Small Group Tutoring:

  • Provide small group tutoring to students.
  • Responsible for working with LEAD office manager and LEAD team to schedule, organize, and communicate tutoring session meeting time.
  • Through facilitation, develop an atmosphere of mutual trust and support within the tutoring group.
  • Be available for retake or remediation support


Large Group Reviews:

  • Plan, prepare, and deliver on campus/virtual large group review sessions with the collaboration of the LEAD team.
  • Create practice questions.
  • Collaborate and communicate with Faculty as needed.
  • Adhere to LEAD Large Group Review policies.


Data Management:

  • Accurately maintain, complete, and submit an electronic attendance log and for tutoring sessions using LEAD data management system.
  • Submit timecards either manually or through WesternU processes.


Additional Duties:

  • Collaborate with LEAD office regarding any tutoring issues (academic or personal).
  • Perform tutorial sessions or workshops related to supporting TAP operations.
  • Create and deliver course overviews in SPaRC.
