Augusta University's Department of History, Anthropology, and Philosophy at Augusta University is seeking to fill a one-year Instructor-Limited Term position in Biological Anthropology, beginning in August 2026. The candidate should have at least a master's degree, or equivalent, in Anthropology with clear qualifications to teach the subfield of Biological Anthropology as a laboratory science. Demonstrated teaching excellence at the college level is preferred. This position does not meet the requirements to be on a tenure track.

Responsibilities

• Teach 12 hours per term. Courses taught will include general education sections of Introduction to Biological Anthropology and Biological Anthropology Laboratory, as well as upper-division classes on Human Origins and other introductory and upper-level courses assigned by the department chair.
• Student mentoring, grading, and compliance with university policies regarding teaching, such as reporting attendance and holding final exams during assigned times
• Create, update, and submit course syllabi/outlines to the department and university platforms, as required by university and system policies
• Promote student success by engaging in activities that enhance student learning and position learners to be successful in achieving their short- term and long-term academic, career, and personal growth goals.
• Attend departmental and other required meetings and provide service to the program, department, and university as assigned

Required Qualifications

M.A in Anthropology or ABD Status

Experience as a teaching assistant or in teaching biological anthropology at the college level

Required faculty employment qualifications for all USG institutions and all academic ranks within these institutions shall be:

• Consistent with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)'s requirements for institutional accreditation;
• Evidence of ability as a teacher;
• Evidence of activity as a scholar and ability in all other duties assigned;
• Successful experience (which will necessarily be waived for those just entering the academic profession who meet all other requirements); and,
• Desirable personal qualities judged on the basis of personal interview, complete biographical data, and recommendations.

Preferred Qualifications

• Ph.D. in Anthropology
• Experience teaching biological anthropology at the college level
• Demonstrated success teaching a wide range of student populations

Shift/Salary/Benefits

This position is academic year based and typically works August through May, depending on dates outlined in offer letter and yearly contract.

The intended work commitment or full-time equivalent (FTE) for this position is 1.0.

Salary and compensation is commensurate with education, experience, and achievements. The salary is subject to availability of funds.

The Department of History, Anthropology, and Philosophy is housed in the Pamplin College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. The College is home to 7 departments, with more than 1,300 majors, over 200 full-time and part-time faculty, and more than 50 distinct academic programs, including Master's programs in Intelligence and Security Studies, Public Administration, and Psychology, and a PhD in National Defense.

The Department of History, Anthropology and Philosophy offers BA Degrees in History and Anthropology; Minors in History, Anthropology, and Philosophy; and certificates in Health Humanities and Museum Studies. The Department has a dedicated biological anthropology lab in the Summerville Science Building as well as an archaeological lab.
