Clinical Teaching Field Experience Supervisor Special Education

Job Description Summary:

The Field Experience Supervisor for Special Education provides support and guidance to LFCE teaching credential candidates working in a TK-12, 18-22 special education setting, completing fieldwork, intern, or directed/student teaching hours throughout the Inclusive Education (Special Education) program. The Field Experience Supervisor will mentor, observe candidates, evaluate their performance, and provide constructive feedback.


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree from and accredited institution.
  • Valid Clear California Special Education Teaching Credential with an English Learner Authorization: Mild/Moderate, Moderate/Severe, Mild/Moderate Support Needs, Extensive Support Needs.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Three years of experience with successful special education teaching experience Three years of experience working with diverse student populations including English learners.
  • Knowledge of the California Standards for the Teaching Profession for Special Education.
  • Knowledge of the Teaching Performance Expectations (TPEs) for Special Education.
  • Basic technology skills: completing online forms, scanning/emailing attachments Experience with online collaboration tools such as Google Classroom, WebEx, Zoom Experience in teaching and/or working with adult learners.


Preferred Qualifications:


Knowledge of the California Teaching Performance Assessment (CalTPA) for Special Education


Specific Duties:

  • Observe teaching credential candidates in TK-12, 18-22 special education settings and/or online settings. Evaluate the candidate’s performance (a minimum of 6 observations per semester) and provide constructive feedback. Complete observation forms and email feedback on the observations to the student and fieldwork department in a timely manner. Complete and submit final student evaluations by stated deadlines.

Percentage of Time: 20%

  • Communication: Communicate on a regular basis with the school-site support supervisor/provider, school-site administrator, and university personnel (e.g., course instructor, clinical practice office) regarding the candidate’s performance, progress, and concerns as they arise. Maintain professional and ongoing communication with LFCE students, faculty, staff, and established fieldwork site representatives. Use various modes of communication: email, video chat (i.e., Zoom), phone, text, etc.

  • Review and provide feedback for student lesson plans, instruction/assessment, and portfolio. Provide suggestions and resources as needed. Requires traveling to different school sites. Must provide own transportation and automobile insurance

  • Use effective mentoring strategies that are appropriate for students with diverse educational and experiential backgrounds and learning styles. Knowledge of special education settings, ,assessments, the IEP/504 process, pedagogical skills, content knowledge, behavior management, social-emotional learning, etc.

Percentage of Time: 20%

  • Utilize technology-based teaching and communication platforms to support candidates and program standards. Be willing to learn advanced technology to support the student observation process and virtual teaching/ learning; some examples include Google Classroom, Zoom, WebEx, etc. Must have access to technology.
