Job Description:

The Assistant/Associate Professor will be assigned teaching, scholarly activity, service, and clinical practice responsibilities as a faculty member in the COM. They will report to the Chair of the Department of Primary Care and participate and assist the Department Chair and colleagues in the development and implementation of curricula to integrate the medical specialties in team-based, large and small group learning environments as well as physical exam and clinical teaching.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Continuously prepares and teaches course material throughout the four-year DO curriculum, which may include assignments in the classroom setting, teaching laboratories, simulation events and remote web-based education. Teaching assignments in medical simulations includes standardized patients (SPs), manikin-based simulation and telemedicine education
  • Research or other scholarly activity
  • COM or University service
  • Clinical practice within FQHC1-2 days per week
  • Develops course syllabi
  • Actively participates in curriculum and assessment development for student success
  • Provides student advisement/office hours
  • Continuously participates in admissions activities
  • Engages in research/scholarly activity and continued professional development
  • Participates in patient-centered and team-based clinical care as part of the KCU commitment to improving the well-being of the communities we serve
  • Participates in Commencement and White Coat ceremonies
  • Understands accreditation standards and expectations specific to the department and adheres to policies and procedures to meet or exceed such standards



Qualifications:

  • Professional degree (DO, MD) from an accredited institution of higher education
  • Completion of a Primary Care (Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics), Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine, or Preventive Medicine residency, and are currently board eligible or board certified
  • Candidates who have completed subspecialty training in a recognized subspecialty and currently BE/BC by appropriate specialty board(s) will also be seriously considered
  • Current or eligible for licensure in the state of Missouri and Kansas
  • Current or eligible for BNDD/DEA certification
  • Current or eligible for a hospital appointment



Preferred Qualifications:

  • Interest in clinically serving the underserved population
  • Prior teaching experience in an academic setting
  • Knowledge of instructional technologies
  • Experience with curricular and instructional design, and training or experience in educational theory and/or evaluation
  • Experience using innovative teaching methods and/or a willingness to utilize the learning sciences as they apply to medical education. These methods may include presentation-based education, team-based learning, "flipped classroom", distance learning (synchronous and asynchronous), interactive large group presentation, audience response systems, curriculum delivery systems, simulation-based instruction and proficiency in assessment and exam item writing (COMLEX and USMLE-style questions)
