Assistant Professor of Chemistry (Tenure Track)

Primary Purpose and Essential Functions:
The Department of Chemistry at the University of the Pacific prepares undergraduate and graduate students in the chemical sciences through teaching, year-round undergraduate research, and mentoring of M.S. and Ph.D. students in the Pharmaceutical and Chemical Sciences Program. This tenure-track Assistant Professor of Organic Chemistry supports that mission by teaching core and specialized courses and by building a research program that involves undergraduate and graduate students and is competitive for external funding.

  • Teach Organic Chemistry.
  • Teach General Chemistry.
  • Teach courses in the candidate's area of specialization at the undergraduate and graduate (M.S. and Ph.D.) levels.
  • Provide academic advising to undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Develop a strong, independent research program suitable for undergraduate and Ph.D. student involvement.
  • Pursue external funding to support the research program.
  • Mentor undergraduate researchers on a year-round basis.
  • Mentor M.S. and Ph.D. students in the Pharmaceutical and Chemical Sciences Program.
  • Participate in departmental and university service as expected of tenure-track faculty.
  • Seek collaborations across the university's professional schools, including pharmacy, dentistry, and the planned School of Medicine.

Minimum Qualifications:
Ph.D. in chemistry or a closely related field.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Postdoctoral training; Research interests in organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, bioorganic chemistry, or chemical biology.
  • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
  • Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.

This is an in-person role, and the successful candidate must be willing to relocate within California, preferably within 25 miles of the Stockton Pacific campus.

Requires extended periods of sitting and repetitive hand/wrist motion while using a computer keyboard and phone. Occasional standing, walking, climbing stairs, bending, stooping, and reaching. Occasional lifting up to 25 pounds.

Work Environment/Work Week/Travel: Work is performed during standard hours; Additional hours may be required to meet business needs or deadlines.

Special Instructions:
Appointment begins Fall 2027.
