Preferred and Required Qualifications

The University of Manitoba invites applications for a Canada Research Chair Tier 2, a tenure-track or tenured position at the rank of assistant or associate professor, in the area of Pharmaceutical and/or Health Sciences commencing on October 1, 2027, or a date mutually agreed upon. Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience, in accordance with the University of Manitoba Faculty Association collective agreement.
The Canada Research Chairs (CRC) program supports Canadian universities in advancing world-class research excellence. The College of Pharmacy has a long history of excellence in pharmacy education and research. The College of Pharmacy provides an exceptional research environment within the state-of-the-art Apotex Centre which includes both wet and dry laboratory space and respective equipment including cell/tissue culture rooms, a ZetaPALS zeta potential analyzer, -80°C freezers, qPCRs, high content plate reader, a cold room, and an organic synthesis room. The College of Pharmacy is also home to the Pharmaceutical Analysis Lab
(P.A.L.) which has Shimadzu and Waters HPLCs as well as single and triple quadrupole mass spectrometers, including a Shimadzu 8040 and a SCIEX 6500. The College currently has 22 full-time tenured and tenure-track faculty members and 11 full-time Instructors.

Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will establish and lead an original, innovative, extramurally funded research program within a collaborative team environment. Examples of research areas of interest include, but are not limited to, drug discovery, design, and development (including pharmacology, medicinal chemistry, and computer- or AI-aided drug design); drug delivery (including pharmaceutics, pharmacokinetics, and materials engineering related to healthcare); drug metabolism; mechanisms of disease and disease models; population therapeutics and health outcomes research; pharmacoepidemiology; pharmacogenetics; pharmacogenomics; pharmacoeconomics; and translational health and clinical pharmacy research.
The position includes a laboratory start-up package and the opportunity to compete for additional equipment funding locally and via the Canadian Foundation for Innovation. The successful applicant will have access to Rady Faculty of Health Sciences core research platforms including state-of-the-art facilities for flow cytometry, live cell imaging, multiplex imaging, histomorphology and ultrastructural imaging, single cell transcriptomics, proteomics, bioinformatics, humanized mouse models and others. The chair will contribute to undergraduate, graduate, and pharmacy education through teaching and mentorship and will be expected to participate in academic service activities within the university.
Qualifications:
• The successful candidate must be an emerging world-class scholar who has completed a Ph.D. or discipline-appropriate doctoral degree (PharmD, MD, DMD, DVM) and a minimum of two years post-doctoral fellowship training or equivalent industrial experience.
• The candidate must demonstrate a strong record of scholarly activities, which may include a strong record of publication in high quality, peer-reviewed journals, generation of intellectual property and knowledge mobilization, excellent communication skills, ability to secure competitive, extramural research funding and in particular Tri-Agency funding, and potential to achieve international recognition in their fields in the next five to ten years.
• The successful applicant must also demonstrate the potential to lead an original, innovative high-impact research program, attract funding from the Canadian Tri-Agencies (i.e. CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC), and develop and mentor excellent trainees.
• Applicants must have demonstrated teaching potential and/or experience in teaching a diverse student body at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels, including mentorship of trainees.
• The successful candidate must also have knowledge of and demonstrated commitment to Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.

A Tier 2 CRC Nomination will be submitted soon after a successful candidate has been selected. Chairs are awarded by the Tri-Agency Institutional Programs Secretariat after a rigorous evaluation, and award decisions are expected by October 2027, with the appointment starting thereafter on a date mutually agreed to. The appointment will be conditional upon receiving a Canada Research Chair award.
Tier 2 Chairs are valued at $100,000 per year for 5 years with an option to renew once. Applicants for Tier 2 Chair positions must be exceptional emerging researchers. Applicants who are more than 10 years from their first independent academic research-related appointment at the time of nomination and have experienced eligible career interruptions will have their eligibility for a Tier 2 Chair assessed through the program's Tier 2 justification process. Acceptable justifications are generally limited to breaks in the candidate’s research career due to maternity or parental leave, extended sick leave, clinical training, and family care.
