Assistant Professor, Public/Nonprofit Management

INTRODUCTION

The School of Public Policy (SPP) at the University of Connecticut (UConn) seeks to fill a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor starting in August 2027. Candidates already appointed at the Assistant Professor level are encouraged to apply. We are seeking candidates with research and teaching interests in public and/or nonprofit management. The successful candidate is expected to demonstrate a strong research agenda in public and/or nonprofit management. The successful candidate’s primary teaching assignment will include core classes in the MPA and/or Nonprofit Management Certificate programs, such as courses in public management, project management, human resource management, and nonprofit management.

The specific teaching assignment will be determined based on the interests of the candidate and the needs of the School and may include graduate and undergraduate classes. The successful candidate will demonstrate a deep commitment to student success and teaching excellence at the undergraduate and graduate levels, with a preference for candidates with professional experience in public or nonprofit management. The best candidates will also provide clear evidence of contributions to the diversity and excellence of the learning experience through teaching, research, and/or public engagement.

ABOUT THE SCHOOL OF PUBLIC POLICY

The School of Public Policy is home to a Master of Public Administration (MPA) program, an Executive Track MPA program (the Fellows program) offered in Hartford and in Stamford, and a Master of Public Policy (MPP) program. It also offers three graduate certificates: Nonprofit Management, Public Financial Management, and Leadership and Public Management. The School of Public Policy is located on the state-of-the-art campus in Hartford, Connecticut’s capital city. The School also offers classes in Stamford and Storrs.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Earned Ph.D. in public affairs, public administration, management (with a nonprofit management focus), organizational behavior (with a nonprofit management focus), sociology (with an organizational theory and management focus), or a related field. ABD candidates will be considered with the expectation that the Ph.D. is completed before the start date. Candidates already appointed at the Assistant Professor level are also encouraged to apply.
• A strong record of or strong potential for research excellence in the areas of public management and/or nonprofit management.
• Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to teach core public management and/or nonprofit management courses in the MPA and/or Nonprofit Management Certificate programs.
• Demonstrated experience contributing through scholarship, teaching, and/or public engagement to the diversity and excellence of the learning experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Public or nonprofit management professional experience, and/or ability to teach Executive Track courses.
• A record of, or potential for, obtaining external research funding.
• Evidence of a commitment to student success and teaching excellence, such as positive teaching evaluations, innovative courses and instruction methods, and/or mentoring students in research and/or professional development.
• Interest in engaging with local, state, and national public service and/or nonprofit organizations in related areas of expertise.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track position with an anticipated start date of August 23, 2027, with a possibility of starting in January 2027. The successful candidate’s academic appointment will be in the School of Public Policy located at the Hartford Campus. The successful candidate’s ordinary teaching workload could include teaching at the Hartford campus, at the Stamford campus, at UConn’s main campus in Storrs, and/or online. The University offers a highly competitive salary commensurate with qualifications and experience.
