The Medical College of Georgia (MCG) is one of the nation's largest medical schools by class size, with 304 students per class. The MCG educational experience is anchored by the main campus in Augusta, with regional clinical campuses for third- and fourth-year students across the state, and two four-year campuses located in Athens (in partnership with the University of Georgia) and in Savannah (in partnership with Georgia Southern University). MCG's expanding partnerships with physicians and hospitals across Georgia currently provide more than 350 sites where students can experience the full spectrum of medicine, from complex care hospitals to small-town solo practices. MCG and its teaching hospitals also provide postgraduate education to approximately 575 residents and fellows in 50 different Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-approved programs. Our researchers and clinicians focus on what most impacts the health of Georgia's and America's children and adults, including cardiovascular biology and disease, cancer, neurosciences and behavioral sciences, public and preventive health, regenerative and reparative medicine, personalized medicine and genomics. Our physician faculty also share their expertise with physicians and patients at about 100 clinics and hospitals statewide.
This position is responsible for selecting, orienting, training, assigning, scheduling, coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees, communicating job expectations, planning, monitoring, appraising job contributions, recommending compensation actions, adhering to policies and procedures. Uphold financial standards by providing annual budget information, ensure cost-effective use of labor and materials, perform departmental purchasing including p-card use, monitoring expenditures, identifying variances, implementing corrective actions. Maintain systems and equipment by completing preventive maintenance schedules, restoring, repairing, rebuilding, or replacing faulty or inoperative components and parts. Evaluates functionality and reliability of facility systems and associated research equipment by conferring with operating departments and research faculty, identifying problems and requirements. Fabrication of complex mechanical and electrical research support equipment.
The duties include but are not limited to:
PERSONNEL: Manage recruitment of support staff, professional development, status changes, and retention. Maintain personnel records and coordinate performance evaluations, update and create job duties, position descriptions and reclassifications as deemed necessary. Cross train staff and provide additional support in their absence.
BUSINESS/FINANCIAL ADMIN: Responsible for short/long term business and financial administration including coordination and maintenance of work schedules and workloads, procurement, internal/external invoicing, tracking monthly expenditures, review/approve employee leave, coordinate travel requests, maintain equipment contracts, and advise on fiscal year budget development. Administer departmental asset and space management functions including yearly inventory and surplus/moving requests. Coordinate updates/corrections to the asset and space inventory through the Divisions of Asset Management and Facilities Planning, Design and Construction. Oversee preventive maintenance, emergency/unscheduled repairs and rebuilding of MCG-Biomedical Maintenance & Utility machine and electrical shop equipment Organizes the use of tools and equipment in order to ensure the optimum level of safety.
EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE: Install, repair and certify various types of laboratory research equipment including but not limited to refrigeration devices, cryogenic freezers, fume hoods, laminar airflow devices, carbon dioxide incubators, orbital incubators, refrigerated centrifuges, cell washers rockers, nutators, shakers stirrers, autopsy saws gurneys, dental drills, articulating overhead surgical lamps, glucose meters, luminometers, microscopes, microscope light sources, ovens, autoclaves, DNA polymerase chain reaction thermal cyclers microtomes, cryostats, tissue sample wax embedders, hyper-/hypoxia chambers, desiccator chambers, cell counters, heated water baths, electrophoresis power supplies, electrophoresis trays, sterilizers, ultrapure water purifiers gas/air operated anti-vibration tables, air/vacuum pumps, gas safety monitors, liquid nitrogen cryo-storage systems, compressed gasses delivery systems, and vacuum, air, electric, and water services at the point of use.
BIOLOGICAL SAFETY CABINETS: Responsible for coordinating tracking, performing repairs and/or yearly recertification and facilitation of billing of approximately 400 biological safety cabinets (BSCs). Through the use of thermal anemometers, spectrophotometers, and direct inflow measurement equipment, test BSC's in accordance with manufacture standards and/or NSF to include downflow, inflow, HEPA Filter challenge, smoke test, site assessment, lighting, sound, vibration and electrical instruction staff for proper use of equipment.
CUSTOM FABRICATION: Based on individualized consultation with research faculty provide custom fabrication of research equipment and accessories using, but not limited to: XYZ milling machine, CAD milling machine, Small parts metal lathe, Engine lathe, MIG welder/TIG welder, Sand blasting, Horizontal band saw, Vertical band saw, High speed polishing, Table saw, chemical fume hood, aluminum anodizer, manual press and turret punch.
OTHER: Perform all other duties as assigned.
Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in an applicable related area and a minimum of three years' laboratory equipment repair or related experience.
OR
High school diploma, GED or equivalent from a recognized State or Federal accrediting organization with a minimum of five years' laboratory equipment repair or related experience.
Manufacturer training for BSC certification, HVAC systems and laboratory design. Advanced electrical AC/DC component level experience.
KNOWLEDGE
Proficient in Microsoft Office and other computer software/databases.
SKILLS
Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
Detail-oriented with strong prioritization and organizational skills.

Ability to maintain confidentiality.
