POSITION OVERVIEWUnder general direction, plans, develops, coordinates, and manages Districtwide sustainability, energy, and environmental responsibility programs. Provides leadership and technical expertise in the implementation of energy efficiency, conservation, and sustainability initiatives; oversees utility systems and resource management; and coordinates campus engagement, education, and partnerships to support the District's sustainability and climate goals.
Serves as the District's primary resource for environmental impact mitigation and energy management, ensuring alignment with regulatory requirements, District priorities, and industry best practices.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICSThe Assistant Director of Environmental Responsibility is distinguished from other management classifications by its responsibility for Districtwide leadership and coordination of sustainability, energy management, biodiversity and environmental initiatives. The incumbent independently manages complex programs, provides technical expertise in energy systems and sustainability practices, and integrates sustainability principles into facilities planning, construction, and operations, while working under the general direction of the Director of Facilities Planning, Maintenance and Operations.

Essential Functions

- Leads and coordinates District-wide environmental responsibility initiatives, including sustainability, climate action, pollution reduction, biodiversity, and resource conservation programs.
- Develops and implements initiatives addressing biodiversity, environmental impact reduction, and climate resilience across campus operations.
- Manages District energy systems, including generation, distribution, and infrastructure mapping, while advancing integrated resource conservation strategies. Monitors performance and maintains system documentation and mapping.
- Designs and implements comprehensive sustainability initiatives, including electrification, renewable energy expansion, EV fleet transition, EV charging infrastructure, and waste reduction programs.
- Manages building commissioning processes and supports sustainable design and construction standards for new construction and renovation projects.
- Participates in capital planning and construction projects; develops scopes of work, cost estimates, schedules, and budgets; monitors expenditures and prepares reports and recommendations for leadership and the Board.
- Participates in the development of and monitors performance against the department's annual budget; administers department budgets, including grants and other outside funding; develops financial projections and statistical reports as required; develops multiyear plans for large purchases; approves purchase requests for supplies and equipment; ensures the department's grant funding and partnership-related fiscal matters are handled in accordance with District policies and regulations as well as appropriate state and federal laws and regulations.
- Tracks, analyzes, and reports Districtwide sustainability metrics, including energy, water, waste, biodiversity, and greenhouse gas emissions; develops performance indicators, dashboards, and required regulatory reports.
- Coordinates with internal departments, contractors, utilities, and public agencies; negotiates services and secures grants, rebates, and incentive funding.
- Serves as a liaison to campus and community constituent groups on sustainability initiatives; coordinates collaboration, fosters partnerships, and supports engagement, education, and outreach efforts to advance District environmental goals.
- Chairs or supports sustainability committees, including the Environmental Action Committee;advisesstudent organizations and develops campus-wide sustainability engagement, education, and outreach initiatives.
- Serves as a technical expert and advisor on sustainability, energy systems, and environmental compliance;researchesbest practices and provides recommendations on policies and programs.
- Develops andmaintainsreports, documentation, digital content, and program communications to inform the campus community ofenvironmental impact mitigationgoals, progress, and outcomes.
- Supervises, trains, and evaluates assigned staff and student workers; coordinates consultants and vendors; manages program operations and administrative functions.
- Ensures compliance with applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, and standards related to sustainability, construction, and environmental programs, including CEQA, CALOSHA, ADA, and LEED guidelines.
- Overseesbiodiversity initiatives, including data collection, tracking, and reporting on campus ecological systems and natural resources.
- Participatesin and collaborateswith regional or statewide biodiversity consortiums to advance District environmental goals.
- Provides leadership for the development and administration of contracted projects, including preparation of project timelines, bid specifications, drawings, and bid packages; coordinates with purchasing department on the solicitation and advertising of bids; assists in the evaluation of bids; ensures that contracts and other documents are completed prior to project initiation; and monitors contract performance to ensure timely and successful completion of project.
- Ensures the implementation of District standards in compliance with the Board's position on Sustainability and Environmental Stewardship.
- Engages in participatory governance andisinvolved with institutional activities such as program review and strategic planning
- Presentsto the Board of Trustees, executiveleadershipand other groups;representsthe College and presents at community meetings and events and at local, regional,stateand national conferences, meetings,workshopsand training seminars.
- Fosters an environment that embraces equity-minded practices, integrity, trust and respect; supports, implements and promotes compliance with the College's Diversity and Equal Employment Opportunity Plan in all aspects of employment and education; increases cultural and ethnic diversity in staffing, programs and services.

Requirements & Desirables
REQUIREMENTSEducation and Experience: - Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in sustainability, environmental science, engineering, or a related field, and at least four (4) years of increasingly responsible experience in sustainability programs, energy management, or construction/project management; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
- Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
Licenses and Certifications: A valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District's vehicle insurance program, or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS- Master's degree in a related field
- Experience in higher education or public sector sustainability programs
- Professional certifications such as LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP) or Certified Energy Manager (CEM)

- California Education Code, Section 87408.6 requires persons employed by a community college in an academic or classified position to submit to a TB risk assessment developed by CDPH and CTCA and, if risk factors are present, an examination to determine that he or she is free of infectious TB; initially upon hire and every four years thereafter.
- DISASTER SERVICE WORKERS: All Marin Community College District (MCCD) employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Supplemental & Salary Information
CLASSIFICATION & RETIREMENT PLANThe Assistant Director of Environmental Responsibility position is a classified administrative position, in compliance with all applicable sections of the California Education Code. Classified administrators also participate in the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) through District and employee contributions. Classified administrative employees are employed subject to the terms and conditions set forth in the individual's employment agreement with the District.
SALARY INFORMATIONFLSA Status: Exempt
Salary Grade: Management Level 43 (M43)
Full Salary Range: $129,828 - 165,180 annually
Starting Salary Range: $129,828 - $139,080 annually (Step 1 to Step 3). Background and experience will determine placement. Step 3 is the maximum entering step.
