Job Summary/Basic FunctionThe Clinical Lab Associate - Skills and Competency supports undergraduate nursing students in the development of foundational clinical skills within the Learning Resource Center (LRC) in the Department of Nursing in the College of Health, Education, and Human Services (CHEH). Working under the direction of faculty and LRC leadership, this role provides hands-on instruction, guided practice, and competency support aligned with course objectives, program outcomes, and accreditation standards.
This position reinforces psychomotor skill development, clinical reasoning, and safe patient care practices by assisting with skills instruction, remediation, and competency validation. The Clinical Lab Associate also contributes to maintaining a safe, organized, and student-centered lab environment that supports high-quality learning experiences.
Minimum Qualifications - Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited Nursing Program
- Current, unencumbered Ohio RN license in good standing or eligibility to obtain Ohio licensure prior to start date.
- Minimum two years of clinical nursing experience, which may include experience in acute care, long-term care, or other relevant healthcare settings.
- Demonstrated ability to articulate the relationship between clinical practice and nursing theory.
- Demonstrated ability to teach or support instruction of foundational nursing skills (e.g., physical assessment, medication administration, IV therapy)
- Ability to provide coaching, feedback, and remediation to support student skill development
- Strong communication skills and ability to foster a supportive, professional learning environment.
- Ability to adhere to safety and infection-control protocols.
Preferred Qualifications - Masters' degree in Nursing
- Prior experience teaching clinical skills in a lab, clinical, or academic setting
- Prior experience conducting competency check-offs or skills validation.
- Familiarity with competency-based education and skills assessment methods
- Experience supporting student remediation and progression
- Demonstrated professionalism, reliability, and commitment to student success.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks independently within a fast-paced clinical education environment.
- Collaboration with faculty, simulation staff, and program leadership.
Essential Functions and percent of timeSkills Instruction and Student Support (50%) - Assist faculty in delivering hands-on instruction in core nursing skills, including physical assessment, medication administration, wound care, and IV therapy
- Provide guided practice, coaching, and remediation support to students requiring additional assistance
- Reinforce clinical reasoning and safe patient care practices during skills practice
- Support competency check-offs and skills validation processes under faculty supervision
- Provide timely, constructive feedback to support student progression and readiness for clinical practice
Lab Support and Learning Environment (20%) - Maintain a safe, organized, and student-ready lab environment
- Assist with preparation and setup of lab spaces for skills instruction and practice sessions
- Ensure adherence to safety, infection control, and lab protocols
- Support open lab sessions and structured practice opportunities
Equipment and Supply Support (15%) - Assist with preparation, stocking, and organization of lab supplies and equipment
- Monitor supply levels and communicate needs to LRC Coordinator or lab leadership
- Support maintenance of skills lab materials and learning resources
Essential Functions and percent of time (cont'd)Documentation and Compliance Support (10%) - Assist with documentation of student participation, skills progression, and competency outcomes
- Follow established processes to ensure documentation aligns with program, state, and accreditation requirements
- Support consistency in skills validation and lab procedures
Other Duties as Assigned (5%) - Support special projects and lab-related initiatives as needed
Non-Essential Functions and percent of timeWorking ConditionsThis appointment follows the academic-year schedule. Additional teaching or operational assignments may be available during summer sessions based on program needs and available funding.Evening or occasional weekend hours may be required based on lab scheduling and student needs.Position requires extended periods of standing, lifting, and moving simulation equipment and supplies as needed.Work is performed in a clinical skills lab environment and may include exposure to simulated clinical materials, cleaning agents, and medical equipment.To preserve the safety and security of the campus community and to maintain the integrity of university operations, it is the policy of Wright State University making an employment offer contingent on various background checks, such as a criminal record, credit history when job related and/or education verifications.
