Position Summary:
The School of Communication, Journalism, and Media at Central Michigan University invites applications for a full-time, fixed-term faculty position in immersive media and content creation.
We are looking for a filmmaker/video production specialist with immersive media experience with a minimum of a master’s degree or higher. The ideal candidate is an innovative storyteller wanting to train the next generation of film and video content creators. We need a faculty member who is passionate about storytelling, experimentation, and the integration of technology with human creativity, while also contributing to CMU’s dynamic program that emphasizes critical thinking, interdisciplinary collaboration, and socially engaged communication practices.
Position Expectations:
- Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in digital media production (cinematography, editing, sound design, motion graphics), photography, audience engagement, and complementary areas of immersive media (VR/AR/MR, 360° video, virtual production, interactive design).
- Develop forward-looking curriculum that blends emerging technologies with timeless storytelling principles.
- Mentor and collaborate with undergraduate and graduate students in both creative and scholarly projects.
- Create connections with industry and community partners to provide students with meaningful, real-world opportunities.
Required Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in media or related field completed by August 24, 2026.
- Demonstrated expertise in film or video production (shooting, editing, sound design, postproduction, motion graphics, and photography)
- Competence in real-time workflow, especially Unreal Engine and Unity along with basic XR design principles, spatial storytelling, and collaborative pipelines.
- Software experience with any or all of Unreal Engine, Unity, Blender, Adobe Creative Cloud, or DaVinci Resolve, with simple version-control tools like GitHub or Perforce.
- Experience with powerful PCs with strong GPUs, a mix of VR headsets like Meta Quest and HTC Vive, and spatial audio technology.
- Strong portfolio of creative work that demonstrates innovation in immersive media.
- Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous college-level teaching experience with evidence of teaching effectiveness
- Familiarity with trends in digital distribution, user experience, and interactive design.
- Experience with drone technology in video production with an FAA Part 107 license.
- Experience in journalism and/or strategic communication industries.
