Summary:The
Olin Library at Rollins College seeks an outstanding and dynamic Research and User Experience Librarian who is dedicated to excellence in teaching, research support, and user-centered library services. This position plays a central role in shaping the library's instruction, research, and user experience, with a particular focus on understanding and improving how students and faculty engage with library resources, services, and spaces.
This is a tenure-track faculty position within Olin Library's Research and Instruction Services department. Librarians with faculty status at Rollins College are expected to demonstrate ongoing growth and development in teaching, librarianship, scholarship, and service throughout their career at Rollins.
The Research and User Experience Librarian provides research and instruction services, including research consultations, teaching, and the design and assessment of user-centered instructional and research experiences. The librarian serves as the primary library liaison to the Science and Math departments, building strong partnerships to support disciplinary research, teaching, and curriculum needs.
In collaboration with colleagues across Olin Library and the College, the Research and User Experience Librarian supports innovative initiatives related to research services, the user experience, and assessment. The position emphasizes the integration of user experience principles into research support and instruction, contributing to continuous improvement of library services based on evidence, assessment, and user feedback.
Essential Job FunctionsInstruction
- Provide research-centered and information literacy instruction within the general education curriculum; undergraduate instruction (including, as needed, credit-bearing courses); and upper division, discipline-specific courses in partnership with faculty in science and math departments.
- Design, implement, and assess user-centered instructional experiences that strengthen students' information literacy, critical thinking, and research practices across the curriculum, informed by student needs, learning outcomes, and evidence-based assessment.
- Integrate research workflow concepts, including topic development, data discovery, source evaluation, and ethical information use into instruction to support students' progression from novice to advanced researchers.
- Collaborate with Instructional Design and Technology, the Tutoring and Writing Center, Digital Strategies & Scholarly Communication, and other campus partners to support research-based teaching, develop new instructional modalities, and enhance the usability, accessibility, and effectiveness of learning materials and experiences.
Research Assistance
- Provide high-quality research consultations and assistance at Olin Library, both in person and virtually, with attention to user needs, disciplinary context, and evolving research practices.
- Deliver specialized research support for students and faculty in science and math liaison departments, including support for research design, data discovery, and effective use of disciplinary tools and resources.
- Collaborate with Olin Library colleagues to continuously assess and improve research assistance services, incorporating user feedback, usage data, and emerging best practices in research support.
- Maintain current knowledge of developments in data management, data literacy, research data services, and dataset availability to support teaching, learning, and research, with specific application in science and math disciplines.
Liaison
- Partner with external faculty to integrate information literacy, research skills, and critical thinking into courses, assignments, and curricula, informed by student learning needs and disciplinary practices.
- Collaborate with the Head of Collections and faculty in liaison areas to develop, assess, and refine collections in all formats, maintaining familiarity with disciplinary resources, emerging research tools, and publishing trends.
- Communicate regularly with liaison departments to share information about library services, research support, and user-centered improvements to resources and services.
- Identify and pursue innovative projects, services, and partnerships with faculty and students that enhance the research experience and usability of library services within science and math instructional programs.
- Collaborate with faculty on research-driven and user-centered assignment design that supports student learning and effective engagement with information and data.
- Represent Olin Library at campus-wide events, programs, and initiatives related to teaching, learning, research, and student success.
Service, Research and Scholarship
- Actively serve on or chair committees, or projects, that address library or campus operations, the community, and the library and information science profession.
- Research and scholarship in academic librarianship or another closely related, appropriate discipline.
Professional Development
- Demonstrate continued membership and activity in appropriate professional organizations; represent Olin Library and Rollins College through publication, presentation, and attendance at conferences.
- Continue professional development in an appropriate area(s) of librarianship.
Minimum Qualifications and Education: - MLS or MLIS from an ALA-accredited library program.
- Educational background and/or work experience that indicates an ability to integrate the work of the library into a campus community.
Preferred Qualifications: - Research and instruction experience in an academic, government, public, or corporate library.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: - Experience with information literacy instruction for groups and individuals.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to interact with the public and academic community effectively and courteously.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment and independently.
- Appreciation for liberal arts education and the role of the library in higher education.
- Ability to adapt to change in a library environment.
- Potential to present, publish, or otherwise contribute to academic librarianship or another appropriate discipline.
- Potential to fulfill tenure requirements.
