POSITION OVERVIEW
The job of Custodian is done for the purpose/s of maintaining an attractive, sanitary and safe facility for students, staff and public; providing equipment and furniture arrangements for meetings, classroom activities and events; and minimizing property damage, loss and liability exposure.

REQUIREMENTS
1.) One year of experience in custodial work; and
2.) Equivalent of the completion of eighth grade; and
3.) The ability to lift 45 pounds; and
4.) A valid California driver's license; and
5.) Demonstrated sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds, disabilities and learning styles of community college students and staff.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES (Desirable Attributes & Skills)
SKILLS are required to perform multiple non-technical tasks with some need to upgrade skills due to changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating equipment and materials used in industrial maintenance; adhering to safety practices. Use of new or additional equipment brought about by new technology shall be incorporated consistent with the level of responsibility and complexity of this job.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math; read and interpret instructions; and understand multiple step instructions. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job includes: methods of industrial cleaning; safety practices and procedures.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and coordinate a number of factors in the use of equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others under a variety of circumstances; analyze data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using various methods of operation. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with data of similar types and/or purposes; and utilize a variety of job related equipment. In working with others, some problem solving is required to analyze issues, create plans of action and reach solutions; with data it is limited; and with equipment it is moderate. Specific abilities required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adapting to changing work priorities; communicating with diverse groups; meeting deadlines and schedules; working as part of a team.

RESPONSIBILITY
Responsibilities include: working under standardized instructions and/or routines focusing primarily on results; providing information and/or advising other persons; and operating within a defined budget and/or financial guidelines. WORKING ENVIRONMENT
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions requires the following physical demands: significant lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; significant stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling; significant reaching, handling, fingering and/or feeling. Generally the job requires 5% sitting, 70% walking and 25% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes, some hazardous conditions (e.g. mechanical, cuts, burns, infectious disease, high decibel noise, etc.), and in a clean atmosphere.

Salary Range: SEIU Range 433
Full Salary Range: $24.68 - $38.55 per hour
Starting Salary Range: $24.68 to $27.20 per hour (Step 1 to 3). Normal entering step is Step 1.

CLASSIFICATION CATEGORY & RETIREMENT PLAN
The Custodian is a classified position represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), in compliance with all applicable sections of the California Education Code and related statutes. Employees in classifications represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 1021 and are required to comply fully with the SEIU/Marin Community College District (MCCD) Collective Bargaining Agreement. General information regarding rights and responsibilities under the Agreement can be found in the Collective Bargaining Agreements section of our Human Resources site. SEIU employees are also members of the California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), to which the member contributes up to 8% of their reportable compensation on a monthly basis.
SELECTION PROCESS
THE BENEFITS OF EMPLOYMENT WITH COLLEGE OF MARIN
SEIU Full-time Employees: The District offers six comprehensive medical plan options through Kaiser and Blue Shield. Effective 10/01/2025, the District makes a substantial contribution toward monthly medical insurance premiums. Regardless of the plan selected, the District's contribution fully covers the premium for employee-only coverage.
The District contribution amounts are:
Based on the plan selected and the number of dependents covered, employees may experience a low or no monthly payroll deduction for dependent coverage.
Dental and Vision Insurance - Delta Dental and VSP vision plans for employee and dependents, with no cost to employees
Vacation Leave - 102 hours of accrual annually, with additional accrual after 3, 10, and 14 years of service
Paid Holidays - 18 paid holidays annually, which includes a paid winter holiday break at the end of December.
Sick Leave - 8 hours per month, 96 hours per year
Retirement through CalPERS - MCCD contributes 27.05% of employee's creditable earnings to CalPERS on a monthly basis (2024/2025). Vested after five (5) years. Mandatory employee contribution for 2024/2025 is 7% - 8%, depending on original date of membership and prior membership status.
Life Insurance - $50,000, with the option to purchase additional voluntary life insurance for the Lesser of 5x base annual salary or $500,000
Additional Retirement Savings Plans - Employees are also eligible to participate in a voluntary, tax-advantaged 403(b) or 457(b) retirement savings plan.
