Job Summary


Under the direction of the Executive Director of Historic Museums, the Assistant Director of Historic Museums assists in the administrative leadership, curatorial oversight, and educational programming of Georgia's historic museums, with primary responsibility for Andalusia. The Assistant Director supports day-to-day operations, serves as curator for assigned collections, develops and coordinates educational programming, and assists the Executive Director with planning, staffing, and fundraising efforts. The Assistant Director serves in a leadership capacity in the absence of the Executive Director.

Responsibilities


Operations Management-Andalusia - 25%
Oversees day-to-day operations of Andalusia to ensure quality, efficiency, and adherence to professional museum standards and continued accreditation.

Assists the Executive Director in ensuring Andalusia is appropriately staffed and that staff and volunteers are well trained and professional.

Provides oversight and consultation for the ongoing preservation and maintenance of Andalusia, working with appropriate university offices to ensure maintenance, cleanliness, safety, and security of the buildings, grounds, collections, and donated assets.

Curatorial Responsibilities - 25%
Serves as curator for Andalusia and assigned collections, ensuring proper interpretation, conservation, cataloging, and exhibition of objects.

Conducts research related to the museums, their property, and their collections.

Assists in the acquisition of period-appropriate collection pieces and maintains accurate collection and accession records consistent with professional museum standards.

Event/Educational Programming - 25%
Develops, implements, and coordinates educational programming, tours, and public programs for Andalusia and other historic museums as assigned.

Coordinates exhibits and educational events designed to attract visitors and help them gain a better understanding and appreciation of the sites.

Collaborates with the Flannery O'Connor Institute for the Humanities and other academic partners on educational initiatives, seminars, and publications.

Leadership Support and Administration - 15%
Assists the Executive Director with policy development, planning, and day-to-day administrative oversight of the historic museums.

Serves in a leadership capacity in the absence of the Executive Director, exercising sound judgment on operational and administrative matters.

Assists with budget implementation, fundraising in conjunction with University Advancement, grant writing, and friend-raising efforts.

Public Relations and Community Engagement - 5%
Supports and helps maintain positive public relations efforts on behalf of Andalusia and other historic museums as assigned.

Represents the museums to community leadership and members of associations/organizations whose mission supports historic museums.

Other - 5%
Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Executive Director of Historic Museums or university administration, or as necessary for the effective, efficient, and professional operation of the museums, their grounds, and their collections.

Required Qualifications


Educational Requirements
Bachelor's degree in History, Public History, Museum Studies, Historic Preservation, Architectural History, or a related field.

Other Required Qualifications
Experience with historic house museums or living history sites; familiarity with the academic environment.

Required Experience
Four years of professional experience in museum operations, curatorial work, educational programming, or related administrative or leadership experience in an academic, museum, and/or research setting.

Preferred Qualifications


Preferred Educational Qualifications
Master's degree in History, Museum Studies, Public History, English, Creative Writing, or Education or similar discipline.

Proposed Salary


The minimum salary is $60,868.

ABILITIES
Ability to establish and maintain collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including faculty, staff, students, departmental and senior administrators, and community leadership.

KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge of American history and the historic period(s) associated with Andalusia.

Knowledge and background in one or more of the following: Public History, Architectural History, or Historic Preservation.

Knowledge of professional museum standards, ethics, and practices related to curation and collections management.

SKILLS
Work history that exemplifies high standards for museum curation, exhibitions, programming, research, education, and public outreach.

Skill in developing and delivering educational programming, tours, and public events.

Experience with collections management systems and documentation.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
