Department of Philosophy and Classics

The Department of Philosophy and Classics at the University of Texas at San Antonio offers undergraduate degrees in philosophy and classical studies and humanities, a master's degree in philosophy, and minors in these areas as well as religious studies. The department has 10 tenure track and fixed term track faculty members, many of whom have won research, teaching, or service awards.



Salary Range:
  • Assistant Rank: $49,300 (minimum)
  • Associate Rank: $53,550 (minimum)

Position Summary



The Department of Philosophy and Classics invites applications for a renewable three-year Assistant/Associate Professor of Instruction in Philosophy position, starting August 2026. The successful candidate will be expected to (i) teach a range of undergraduate and graduate courses including critical thinking, contemporary moral issues, basic philosophical problems, and (ii) develop and execute plans for growing philosophy majors and minors. An ability to and interest in coaching our Ethics Bowl team is desirable.



The Assistant/Associate Professor of Instruction is a fixed-term track (FTT) position with a standard 4-4 teaching load. The FTT contract is for 3 years and is renewable. See HOP 2.02 Faculty Appointments and Titles and the Fixed-Term-Track Faculty Salary Pay Scale. FTT faculty members are eligible for research and conference travel funding through internal grants.

Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Philosophy by the time of appointment. AOS: open; AOC: open.
  • Evidence of both teaching excellence and ability to grow Philosophy majors and minors.
  • This position requires the ability to maintain the security and integrity of UT San Antonio and its infrastructure.



Preferred Qualifications
  • The ideal candidate will be an engaging instructor with teaching experience and with a history of generating student interest, building enrollments, and contributing to department service and community.
  • Interested in candidates who are prepared to teach a variety of courses, including (but not limited to) courses related to Latin American philosophy, science, mind, law, technology, or social philosophy. We have many other teaching needs. We encourage applicants to examine our recent course offerings and discuss your competencies for teaching less frequently offered courses or potential new courses.   • The ideal candidate will also show evidence of skill at coaching our Ethics Bowl team.
