Job Details Job SummaryThe Plumber II provides journeyman-level skills in the installation, maintenance, remodeling, construction, and repair of the University's plumbing systems. This role works with the systems including water (processed, RO, DI, etc.), gas, drainage (sanitary, acid, special waste), fixtures, utilities (air, vacuum, nitrogen, etc.), piping, fittings, and equipment.
Core Responsibilities- Installs, repairs, replaces and maintains water lines, airlines, gas lines, vacuum lines, sewer lines, acid drain lines, sump pumps, sewer ejectors, domestic water pumps, water heaters, piping, traps, valves, vents, washbowls, sinks, toilet fixtures, fittings, faucets, drains, special laboratory sinks, drain tables, experimental tables, kilns, forges, basil valves, plug valves, acid neutralizer, condensate drains, roof drains, water filters, drinking fountains, decorative fountains, expansion tanks and associated underground utilities.
- Measures, cuts, and threads / connects pipe, brazes and soft solders copper and other typically used pipe (e.g., plastic, glass, etc.) effectively. Uses other typically used processes such as pro-press.
- Repairs and maintains plumbing by replacing washers and seats in leaky faucets, repairs burst pipes, and opens clogged drains.
- Provides preventive maintenance to hot water and other units throughout the University.
- Inspects buildings, emergency eye washes, and showers and repairs, replaces and installs as required.
- Inspects and repairs natural gas lines, gas meters, and gas regulators and repairs, replaces, and installs as required.
- Maintains and repairs sewer systems and pipes including unstopping fixtures and lines.
- Maintains a clean and safe work environment, including vehicles and mechanical rooms.
- Maintains, repairs, and updates, tools and equipment provided, including but not limited to hand tools, battery-powered tools, sewer cleaning equipment, testing gear, and PPE.
- Performs water softener and RO/DI system maintenance and checks water purification equipment at regularly scheduled intervals.
- Assembles and installs valves and pipe fittings. Repairs and maintains valves, faucets, water heaters, traps, sinks, washbowls, sewers, vents, and fixtures.
- Bends pipe to required angle by use of the pipe-bending machine and joins pipes by use of screws, bolts, fittings, solder, plastic solvent, fusion weld, and caulks joints.
- Connects and maintains hot water units, gas heaters, and furnaces and checks for safe operation.
- Fills the pipe system with water or air and read pressure gauges to determine whether the system is leaking.
- Estimates labor, material, and equipment costs; provide written estimate report and material list to supervisor.
- Troubleshoots systems for malfunctions, analyses, diagnoses, and resolves system problems.
- Installs, repairs, and tests Backflow system components.
- Communicates with peers and upper management regarding solutions to problems with solid time increments.
- Surveys buildings and performs maintenance on equipment in a multi-trade team working environment, assisting outside plumbing trade as needed.
- Requires after-hour/weekend on-call rotation. Must be available for rotating 12PM-9PM evening shift. Must be available for additional shift work, overtime, and odd-hour work in order to support the University Mission at the Main Campus, Downtown Campuses, Park West Fields, and any additional UTSA property or leases, including work for housing and dining facilities.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Journeyman Plumber's license in the State of Texas.
- This position requires the ability to maintain the security and integrity of UT San Antonio and its infrastructure.
Preferred Qualifications- Master plumbing license by TSBPE.
- Medical gas endorsement by TSBPE.
- Backflow prevention assembly tester license by TCEQ.

Working Conditions- Variable environments including indoor and outdoor locations. Exposure to variable Texas weather conditions and/or physical hazards. Exposed to various mechanical, electrical, laboratories, and other university spaces. Exposure to potential occupational hazards including toxic, biological, and chemical hazards within certain laboratory spaces. Exposure to variety of construction and physical plant hazards including medium voltages (15KV), confined space, elevated heights, dust & dampness, high noise levels, outside weather and energized equipment & systems. Exposure to elevated level of noise. Required to wear Personal Protective Equipment when needed, to include: composite toe and/or steel toe boots, eye protection, hardhat, body harness, biological protective gear, ear muffs or plugs, respirator, and arc flash protection. Must wear and properly maintain uniforms. Required to be on stand-by call status, cell phone or two-way radio as assigned and respond to afterhours emergency calls. Required to be on stand-by call status for overtime, evenings, after hours, odd hours, shift work, weekends, and/or holidays as needed. Flexibility in scheduling may be required.
Physical Demands- Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to feel, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. Ability to climb ladders and stairways and work on building rooftops of high elevation. Ability to work in confined spaces such as ceiling, under floor crawlspaces, and manholes. Reaching overhead, at or below shoulder level. Repetitive motions that may include the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. Operating machinery and/or power tools. Required to have visual acuity to perform an activity such as: operating machines such as lathes, drill presses, power saws and mills where the seeing job is at or within arm's reach; performing mechanical or skilled trades tasks of a non-repetitive nature such as ones by carpenters, technicians, service people, plumbers, painters, mechanics, etc. Frequently required to
climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, finger, grasp, feel, and/or use repetitive motions. Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors).
This position will work primarily
on campus. Travel and parking expenses are the employee's responsibility.
