PURPOSE:

Under the general supervision of the Director of Recreation, the Coordinator of Recreational Sports administers the recreational sports programs and manages the daily operations of the Intramural Sports and Sports Club programs. The Coordinator will assist the Director with the fiscal management, facility management, organizational development and the day-to-day operations of the recreational sports programs. The coordinator will have oversight of the university's Intramural Sports and Sports Club programs including: risk management, policy and procedure development, scheduling and event planning, personnel supervision and training, marketing and promotions, programming, strategic planning, and program assessment. The incumbent plans, organizes, implements, and evaluates programs and services that promote the educational and social development of students outside the classroom.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:

1. Oversee all aspects of the Sports Club program. Develop, design, and implement a comprehensive training program, leadership development, and advise all sport clubs. Provides effective advising, assistance and guidance to the Sports Club Council and student organizations. Update and maintain a current sports club handbook and provide training on topics such as safety, travel, fundraising, insurance and waivers, use of university name and trademarks/ logos, budgeting, officer development, hosting competitions, space allocation and reservations, and other topics related to sport club programs. Oversee all club sport budgets, including allocations, fundraising and expenditures. Review and approve all sport club activities such as travel, memberships, participation with National Governing Bodies, club sport uniforms, events, official volunteers, coaches, and payments according to department and university protocols. Oversee all sport club equipment acquisition and maintenance, as well as reservation of spaces.
2. Oversee all aspects of the Intramural program; design semester and academic year intramural sports programs, develops collaborations, monitors student work; resolves operations issues and briefs the Director regarding process of routine work and special projects. Oversees the hiring, development, supervision and bi-annual evaluation of student staff.
3. Develops procedures and implements policies and ensures that they are interpreted and applied properly for all related facilities and programs. Maintains full knowledge of current risk management standards and common safety practices in campus recreation programming and ensures all program areas meet or exceed industry standards. Ensures adequate maintenance and appearance of the recreational facilities and equipment at all times. Ensures appropriate equipment purchases and that appropriate preventive maintenance programs are designed, budgeted and conducted.
4. Develop strategic plans and annual reporting aligned with department, division and university goals for all program areas. Conduct regular assessments of program, department, and divisional goals.
5. Plan, develop, implement, and assist the department with special events, informal recreation, daily operations, and facility functions in collaboration with department and divisional staff. Support the department and the division in student development and university events including, but not limited to: Otter Days, RecFest, RecDay, RecOlympics, all staff training, orientation, university move-in, commencement, RAFT Weekend and other campus wide initiatives and events.

Other Functions:

1. Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Working knowledge of the principles of individual and group behavior; procedures and activities of the program to which assigned; general knowledge of the methods and problems of organizational and program management. General knowledge of research and interview techniques; and of the principles of individual and group behavior.

Ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; use initiative and resourcefulness in planning work assignments and in implementing long-range program improvements; obtain factual and interpretative information through interviews; reason logically; collect, compile, analyze and evaluate data and make verbal or written presentations based on these data; advise students individually and in groups on routine matters where required; recognize multicultural, multisexed and multi‑aged value systems and work accordingly; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, CSU administrators, student organizations, private and public agencies and others in committee work, and student advising and community contacts; and, rapidly acquire a general knowledge of the overall operation, functions and programs of the campus to which assigned. Demonstrated ability to make decisions and carry through actions having implications with regard to other program or service areas Services Office.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: Possession of these knowledge and abilities is typically demonstrated through the equivalent of three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. A master's degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may be substituted for one year of experience. A doctorate degree and the appropriate internship or clinical training in counseling or guidance may be substituted for the three years of experience for positions with a major responsibility for professional career or personal counseling.

Education: Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in a related field, including or supplemented by upper division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where such are job-related.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Master's degree in Recreation, Education, Higher Education, or related field. Two or more years post-graduate experience of program coordination/development experience at the collegiate-level that includes student leadership development, student recreation, intramural sports, sports clubs, activities programming and recreation facilities management supervision, budget development and fiscal management.

Experience supervising student, administrative support and professional staff. Demonstrated success in creating a team environment with a strong student/customer service orientation. Excellent human relations and strong conflict resolution skills. Experience in assessment of programs and activities with a focus on learning outcomes. demonstrated expertise in identifying student needs and developing creative programs and services to meet these needs; excellent interpersonal, conflict resolution, facilitation, communication and presentation skills; project management expertise.

Working knowledge of the specific objectives of Student Activities and Leadership Development and its relationship to the total campus operation; interpret and apply program rules and regulations; advise students individually or in groups on varied and complex matters; develop records management systems; collect and evaluate data, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action; maintain high professional standards; establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with various campus constituents in circumstances which involve the denial of requests or the necessity to persuade others to accept a different point of view.

Technical fluency with Oracle/PeopleSoft, CSU Common Management System or equivalent <student/finance> information system; Microsoft Office Professional; Google Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Drive, Calendar, Forms, etc.); 25Live; intranet drives; and internet browsers.
