Position Information Open Rank Professor of Instruction The Klesse College of Engineering and Integrated Design (KCEID) at The University of Texas at San Antonio (UT San Antonio) invites applications for an Open Rank Professor of Instruction to lead the college's new two-semester First Year Experience program. This faculty member will play a central role in shaping the early academic, professional, and collaborative foundation of all incoming students across engineering, construction science, architecture, and interior design. The select candidate will coordinate a multidisciplinary, project-based course sequence that introduces students to Klesse College values, supports successful transition into higher education, and cultivates essential skills in teamwork, industry engagement, ethics, and emerging technologies.

Klesse College of Engineering and Integrated DesignThe Klesse College of Engineering and Integrated Design (KCEID) is home to more than 4,400 undergraduate and graduate students in 9 undergraduate, 16 Masters, and 6 PhD degree programs. The college is supported by over 150 tenure/tenure-track and fixed-term faculty and a dedicated cadre of staff. Each of the KCEID's five academic units brings unique value for advancing its mission—these include the Departments of Biomedical Engineering and Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical, Aerospace, & Industrial Engineering as well as the School of Architecture & Urban Planning and the School of Civil & Environmental Engineering, and Construction Management. KCEID is also home to 10 research institutions and centers, a student success center, a Large-scale Testing Laboratory, and a Makerspace, supporting research and educational excellence. Collectively, these students, faculty, and staff within KCEID support KCEID's mission to build empowered lives, impactful solutions, and stronger communities..
Salary Range: $62,854 -$96,000 annualized, commensurate with education, experience and qualifications.
Hours: up to 40 hours per week, exempt. Teaching Load: 3 courses in Fall and 3 courses in Spring, plus service responsibilities.
Position SummaryThe Faculty Lead will coordinate and instruct a two-semester, college-wide First Year Experience program serving all incoming KCEID students. The anticipated hire date is Fall 2026, with a preferred start during Summer 2026 for planning and curriculum development. Candidates available to begin in Spring 2027 will also be considered.
The successful candidate is expected to:
- Coordinate, design, and teach the two-semester course sequence, ensuring high-quality implementation across all sections.
- Develop a multidisciplinary, project-based curriculum emphasizing collaboration, ethical leadership, industry engagement, teamwork, AI literacy, foundational software skills, and hands-on learning.
- Recruit, supervise, and mentor teaching assistants and peer mentors.
- Collaborate with faculty across KCEID to align learning outcomes with disciplinary needs and support student progression into major coursework.
- Collect and analyze student performance and retention data to guide evidence-based enhancements to the first-year experience.
- Coordinate with the Student Success Center on tutoring, mentoring, career panels, major selection support, and academic resources.
- Engage in academic innovation, incorporating student-centered pedagogy, research-based teaching practices, and technology-enhanced learning.
Required Qualifications- MS or PhD in an engineering, construction science, architecture, or a closely related field.
- Teaching experience in higher education.
- This position requires the ability to maintain the security and integrity of UT San Antonio and its infrastructure.
Preferred Qualifications- Experience in first-year instruction, curriculum development, or project-based learning.
- Demonstrated use of student-centered pedagogical practices.
- Ability to support student population reflective of Klesse College across multiple disciplines.
- Strong organizational skills for coordinating multi-section courses and supervising teaching assistants.
- Experience integrating tools such as generative AI, engineering and architecture software, or digital design technologies into instruction.
- Demonstrated commitment to student success and retention.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, students, and industry partners.
