Position SummaryKellogg Community College is seeking an Instructional Assistant (part-time) who is passionate about helping students thrive academically! In this role, you will provide subject-specific tutoring and personalized academic support within the Center for Student Success (CSS), empowering learners to deepen their understanding of course concepts, strengthen study strategies, and make meaningful progress toward their educational goals.
Unlike full-time Instructional Assistants, this position focuses exclusively on high-impact tutoring during scheduled hours, without broader program coordination responsibilities. You'll be part of a collaborative, student-centered environment dedicated to fostering academic achievement, persistence, and a culture of learning across the College.

Physical DemandsThe job responsibilities are performed in tutoring and academic support environments with moderate noise and foot traffic. Travel by car required. The job has intermittent periods during which continuous physical exertion is required, such as walking, standing, sitting, stooping, bending, climbing, lifting material or equipment, some of which may be heavy or awkward (8 - 45 pounds). Typically requires regular use of one or more physical senses of medium intensity and long duration. Must meet reasonable deadlines, quotas or demands for accuracy, and may be involved in some mildly unpleasant situations.
Minimum Qualifications - Associate's degree or equivalent combination of education and successful coursework in the subject area(s) tutored.
- Demonstrated proficiency in the academic discipline(s) the individual will tutor.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to explain concepts clearly and adapt to varied learning styles.
- Ability to use basic educational technology and computer applications such as Microsoft Office, LMS platforms, and online learning tools.
- Dependable, punctual, and detail-oriented with the ability to maintain accurate records.
- Commitment to fostering equity, inclusion, and student success.
- Ability to uphold student privacy and follow FERPA guidelines.
Preferred but not Required - Bachelor's degree in the subject area or related field.
- One year of tutoring, teaching, or other academic support experience in a higher education or similar setting.
- Familiarity with community college student needs and barriers to success.
- Experience using tutoring or academic support software, online scheduling tools, or learning management systems.
Proposed SalaryPart-time instructional assistant functions will be paid at the current Board-approved rate (2025-2026 rates are $18.00/hour).

Job DutiesEssential Function: Tutoring & Academic Assistance
Description: - Provide individual and small group tutoring in assigned subject areas, assisting students with understanding course materials, completing assignments, preparing for exams, and improving overall academic skills.
- Use active listening and review of student work to determine appropriate tutoring approaches and support strategies.
- Encourage independent learning by employing questioning techniques, modeling effective academic practices, and promoting content mastery.
- Assist students in developing and implementing study strategies, time management practices, and reading/writing or discipline-specific skills as appropriate.
- Maintain an inclusive, welcoming environment that supports diverse learners and fosters confidence in academic abilities.
Essential Function: Student Support & Learning Environment
Description: - Promote and maintain a quiet, focused, and academically supportive environment in CSS tutoring spaces.
- Help students navigate and use available campus learning resources, including instructor office hours, advising, disability services, and academic workshops.
- Encourage help-seeking behaviors and appropriate utilization of academic support services.
- Maintain awareness of general course expectations and student learning outcomes relevant to the subjects tutored; escalate discipline-specific or curriculum-related questions to faculty or full Instructional Assistants as needed.
Essential Function: Communication, Documentation & Professional Responsibilities
Description: - Accurately document tutoring sessions, student attendance, and other required activity logs.
- Communicate concerns regarding student progress, engagement, or tutoring needs to the supervisor in a timely manner.
- Maintain confidentiality, professionalism, and compliance with FERPA and institutional policies.
- Participate in required meetings, trainings, and professional development related to tutoring, academic support, or departmental procedures.
- Contribute to continuous improvement by providing feedback on tutoring practices or emerging student needs.
