Job Description

The Mechanical Engineering Department at the University of Nevada, Reno is seeking applications for a tenure-track or tenured faculty position at the Assistant or Associate Professor level in the areas of nuclear engineering and thermal sciences who can also support the department’s Nuclear Packaging program.

 

This position aligns with the University’s mission as a land-grant institution and carries responsibilities in undergraduate and graduate instruction, supervision of graduate students, and active engagement in research.

 

The successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain externally funded research projects, contribute to the advancement of nuclear engineering and thermal sciences, support and expand existing programs such as the Nuclear Packaging safety, and participate in university and professional service activities. Responsibilities include undergraduate and graduate instruction, cutting-edge research, service to the university and the profession.

Preferred and Required Qualifications

Required Qualifications

All applicants must have a Doctoral Degree in Mechanical Engineering or another closely related field. 

 

Preferred Qualifications

Candidates whose specialization and interests complement existing research and instructional strengths in the department and affiliated programs will be preferred. Experimental and computational expertise in areas that are relevant to nuclear safety engineering (e.g., waste management and packaging safety, sensors/instrumentation, power systems, reactor physics, radiation imaging, fuel cycles, etc.) is strongly desired.

 

Expertise in thermal fluid sciences (e.g., computational fluid dynamics, heat transfer, multi-phase flows, energy storage or emerging areas) and related professional development education is desirable.

 

For the Assistant Professor position, candidates with post-doctoral experience or prior service as a Research Professor are highly preferred. 

For the Associate Professor position, candidates with tenure-track experience as an Assistant or Associate Professor are preferred. For this level, a demonstrated record of securing federal research funding and producing high-impact scholarly work is expected.
