Job Summary
Develops, manages, and administers programs designed to protect AU research community faculty, staff, students, and patients from harm due to exposure to hazardous chemicals; to prevent chemical contamination of AU facilities and environment; and to ensure compliance with national, international, and local regulations and guidelines for use of hazardous materials. These programs include research chemical safety program; academic chemical safety program; animal use chemical safety program; hazardous waste disposal program; and controlled substances destruction program. Serves as Institution Chemical Safety Officer, and institution Right to Know Officer.

Required Qualifications
Master's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or related physical science from an accredited university, along with four years of chemical safety and hazardous waste program management experience in a university environment.
OR
Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or related physical science from an accredited university, along with seven years in increasingly responsible management roles in chemical safety and hazardous waste management.
Preferred Qualifications
HAZWOPER training. FEMA emergency response training. Certified Hazardous Materials Manager. Certified Safety Professional.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
KNOWLEDGE
Broad knowledge of chemical safety programs sufficient to serve as a recognized subject matter expert for Augusta University, with responsibility for developing policy and program objectives, appraising programs, and providing consultative services to management and technical personnel on a wide variety of hazardous materials problems.
Organic and inorganic chemistry, hazard classification systems for chemical agents, risk assessment for hazardous materials use.
Chemical safety techniques and standard laboratory practices, engineering and administrative controls for chemical safety, regulations governing chemicals in work place.
Chemical safety for animal use in research.
Regulatory requirements and guidance for control of chemical hazards and destruction of controlled substances.
SKILLS
Excellent written and oral communication skills to convey complex information on conditions, requirements, and courses of corrective action to a broad constituency, including students, staff, faculty, and senior management.
Skills to plan, supervise, and evaluate work of subordinate staff; provide mentoring and professional development; and balance mission and resources.
Conduct surveys and evaluate health hazards in a large and complex academic/medical environment, including technically complex and various work processes, frequent changes in operations, the introduction of new or exotic materials, and difficult engineering and/or economic feasibility considerations in the control of chemical hazards.
Enter, transcribe, record, store, or maintain information in either written or electronic form.
Evaluate information against a set of standards.
Use scientific instruments and equipment.
Make a decision or solve a problem by using logic to identify key facts, explore alternatives, and propose quality solutions.
Laboratory techniques and safety practices.
Lead work of others by monitoring, reviewing, training co-workers and/or delegating work.
ABILITIES
Ability to maintain confidentiality. Use logic to analyze or identify underlying principles, reasons, or facts associated with information or data to draw conclusions.

Shift/Salary/Benefits
Shift: Days/M-F (Work outside of normal business hours may be required)
Pay Band: B16
Salary: Minimum $95,200/annual
Salary to be commensurate with the qualifications of the selected candidate within the established range (generally minimum midpoint) of the position.

Conditions of Employment

Motor vehicle reports are required for positions that are required to drive an Augusta University vehicle.
