Position Description

Seattle University's Facilities Services department is seeking a skilled and motivated Facilities Technician with a strong background in air conditioning and refrigeration (AC&R), preferably with experience maintaining commercial kitchen equipment. The successful candidate will be part of a dynamic team supporting a diverse portfolio of buildings and systems across our vibrant urban campus. This is a hands-on, on-site position that plays a vital role in sustaining campus operations for academic, residential, and dining facilities.

Primary Responsibilities

• Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, repairs, and replacements on a variety of campus kitchen equipment, including ovens, steamers, refrigeration units, fryers, dishwashers, and ice machines.
• Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain commercial refrigeration systems supporting campus food service operations, applying expertise in air conditioning and refrigeration (AC&R).
• Conduct preventive and corrective maintenance on a wide range of campus HVAC&R systems to ensure reliability, optimal performance, and energy efficiency.
• Respond to maintenance service requests and emergencies during regular working hours, as well as occasional callbacks during evenings and weekends.
  Coordinate with vendors and contractors for specialized services and the procurement of parts and materials as needed.
• Maintain accurate documentation of all work performed using the university's Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
• Ensure all work complies with applicable safety regulations, building codes, industry standards, and university policies.
• Collaborate with other trades and Facilities team members to support broader building operations and events.
• Participate in department and university training, including safety and professional development.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum of 3 years' experience working in building maintenance or HVAC/refrigeration, with demonstrated skill in diagnosing and repairing AC&R systems.
• Universal EPA Refrigerant Certification (required).
• Ability and willingness to respond to emergency calls after hours and on weekends.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
• Valid driver's license and ability to be insured under the university's motor vehicle policy.
• Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds, climb ladders, and work in tight or elevated spaces as required.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience maintaining, repairing, or installing commercial kitchen equipment in a higher education, hospitality, or healthcare environment.
• Completion of trade school or apprenticeship program in HVAC/R or a related field.
• Knowledge of relevant codes (e.g., mechanical, plumbing, refrigerant handling).
• Familiarity with building automation systems and CMMS software.

Working Conditions
This is a physically active role requiring regular movement throughout campus buildings and mechanical areas. Exposure to heat, cold, noise, and odors is typical when working around kitchen or mechanical systems. Tools, safety gear and PPE will be provided.
