About the Position

Coastline College is hiring an Academic Dean who oversees the departments of English and Humanities, Communication Studies, International Languages, Philosophy, English as a Second Language, Student Success & Resource Centers, the Library, the Bookstore, Dual/Concurrent & K-12 partnerships departments and programs, and the Faculty Center, commencing Fall 2025.

The Academic Dean provides leadership for program development, supports curriculum development, and analyzes annual program review plans. They manage the class schedule, ensure proper staffing, balance faculty loads, class sizes, and course offerings while collaborating with faculty to meet student needs. Additionally, the Dean fosters faculty engagement through regular discussions and interactions, encourages teaching excellence, and plans staff development activities.

We are looking for candidates who have the desire and ability to cultivate a welcoming student-centered culture that positively engages and impacts our diverse student population through the promotion of diversity, equity, inclusion, social justice, accessibility, and anti-racism (DEISAA).

 

Department Specifics

Westminster, Le-Jao campus (WLJC) provides a comprehensive learning environment for students and community members who seek diverse outcomes in their academic and career goals.  The campus is led by an Academic Dean, overseeing the English and Humanities, Communication Studies, International Languages, Philosophy, English as a Second Language, Student Success & Resource Centers, the Library, the Bookstore, and Dual/Concurrent & K-12 partnerships departments and programs, and the Faculty Center. The Directors of Adult Education and Dual/Concurrent & K-12 partnerships are also located at the WLJC. As a reengagement effort for students, educational and community partners, and career exploration, the WLJC is now the home of the Coastline Esports Eco Lab. The lab is a simulated event gaming space designed to provide students the opportunity for hands on exploration of the many facets of the gaming industry. Additionally, service to the community is an integral component of the purpose of the WLJC.   The campus serves as the site host for many community partners and organizations thus increasing the community and service profile of the College.  There is a total of 8 full-time faculty and 58 part-time faculty across the English, humanities, philosophy, communication studies, international languages, and English as a Second Language disciplines.  This dean supervises one director and 6 Classified Professionals.

 

Summary

Plans, organizes, directs, and coordinates instructional programs for an academic division. Plans and develops curriculum, programs, and services that meet the needs of a highly diverse urban student population.

 

Distinguishing Career Features

The Dean for an Instructional Division integrates and provides academic and administrative support to faculty and a diverse student population. The Dean requires the ability to direct and integrate the activities of an academic division and its related functions and services, to provide leadership over curriculum, faculty and support staff, and assure excellence in delivering higher education. The Dean also requires the ability to facilitate professional development, establish standards and assess performance of faculty members.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Specific duties may vary among departments, divisions and jobs. Incumbents typically perform a substantial portion or all of the following types of duties, as assigned:

  1. Provides leadership for program development, plans for current additions, modifications, and deletions to curriculum. Oversees and provides analysis of programs and multi-year instructional plans.

  2. Directs and prepares the schedule of classes and provides for proper staffing of classes, considering faculty loads, class size, and course offerings. Consults with faculty to design schedules that enhance attendance and meet the needs of students. Monitors workload indicators for accuracy and balance.

  3. Communicates with faculty by conducting regular meetings to facilitate planning and collegial decision-making. Ensures staff is informed about issues and projects, and for information about the overall college instructional program(s).

  4. Conducts performance appraisals in compliance with District standards and contractual obligations. Develops program, faculty and staff improvement plans and communicates with HR at the campus and District level.

  5. Provides leadership for faculty and staff development and learning opportunities that enhance effectiveness in the teaching and learning processes. Provides leadership in the development and assessment of course, program, and learning outcomes.

  6. Maintains up-to-date knowledge of new developments and innovations in community colleges and higher education. Recommends changes to maintain relevance of programs in the academic division and to meet student and community needs.

  7. Directs development of division budgets and manages financial resources consistent with policy and sound financial controls. Advocates for resources to support departmental programs and opportunities and allocates resources among competing requests for funds.

  8. Works cooperatively with other administrators and managers to coordinate programs and services across the curriculum to meet student needs. Resolves conflicts and issues within and among academic sections.

  9. Facilitates academic partnerships and maintains communications with Division faculty, faculty in feeder high schools and four-year transfer institutions.

  10. Encourages excellence in teaching. Orients new faculty, management, and staff, determines needs for staff development, plans staff development activities.

  11. Communicates with leaders in the private and public sectors and in educational agencies to determine needs for new courses and programs. Establishes advisory committees and other outreach as appropriate.

  12. Manages Division facilities including classroom spaces and special use spaces; advocates for upgraded and safe spaces; plans for supply and technology orders.

  13. Provides leadership in new and emerging technologies in support of student success, program development, hiring faculty in emerging fields. Advocates for the implementation of new technologies and procedures to improve instructional pedagogy and student support.

  14. May apply for annual grants to fund mandatory functions of departments where college budgets do not cover cost of operations. Ensures the institution is in compliance with the awarded grants

  15. Performs other related duties as assigned that support the objective of the position.

  16. Required to abide by all District policies and procedures including Board Policy 3050 – Code of Professional Ethics.

  10. Requires in-depth knowledge of the principles of functional leadership, training, and performance evaluation.

  11. Requires a working knowledge of pertinent national and state regulations affecting curriculum and academic accreditation.

  12. Requires skill in organizing work and building an effective team to respond to student needs.

  13. Requires advanced human relations skills to deliver formal and influential presentations, build effective teams, review performance, and exercise a unique sensitivity to the needs and interests of a diverse student population.

  14. The position requires specialized professional knowledge of collective bargaining, working conditions and evaluation practices.

  8. Requires the ability to advise staff, direct and facilitate development of personal and team perspectives, develop and deliver training programs.

  9. Requires the ability to oversee and instruct in courses offered by the division.

  10. Requires the ability to develop and monitor budgets and maximize financial resources.

  11. Requires the ability to work cooperatively and productively with others.


Physical Abilities 

  1. The general physical demands, working conditions, and essential job functions associated with this classification will be kept on file with the Office of Human Resources.

Education and Experience 

Possession of a master’s degree AND one year of formal training, internship, or leadership experience reasonably related to the administrator’s administrative assignment. Or, any combination of education and experience which would provide the required equivalent qualifications for the position (Application for Equivalency required).

Demonstrated evidence of responsiveness to and understanding of the racial, ethnic, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic, academic, and cultural diversity within the community college student population, including students with different ability statuses (e.g., physical and/or learning) as these factors relate to the need for equity-minded practice within the classroom.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Doctorate degree, preferred in one of the disciplines in the Division that will be managed. This Division currently oversees the English, humanities, philosophy, communications studies, international languages, and English as a Second Language disciplines.

  • Experience in effectively working with faculty to support culturally relevant and equity-minded pedagogy and practices.

This is a full-time, educational administrator position. The normal hours of work will be Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, with the flexibility to occasionally work extended hours and/or weekends, if necessary, to meet the department's needs.  The effective date of employment will be arranged with the supervisor. The District provides medical, dental, and vision insurance for the employee and eligible dependents and life insurance for the employee. (Salary Schedule: DG-12)
