Purdue University, School of Mechanical Engineering

Faculty Position IN School of Mechanical engineering

The School of Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University invites applications for a non-tenure track Faculty of Engineering Practice position at all levels (Assistant, Associate or Full Professor). Purdue University seeks to attract exceptional candidates with expertise in the professional practice of motorsports, engineering design, or hands-on/experiential learning. Successful candidates must hold an advanced degree (M.S or Ph.D. with at least 5 years of relevant industrial experience) in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline and demonstrate potential to integrate their professional practice with the School of Mechanical Engineering’s research, education, and/or engagement/outreach programs.  The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate level courses, and mentor/advise student project and club teams in relevant areas.  Additionally, the successful candidate will leverage existing or create new industrial relationships to enrich the educational experiences of students.

Established in 1882, the School of Mechanical Engineering is the oldest of Purdue’s engineering schools and has granted over 28,000 degrees.  The School has nearly 1900 undergraduate students and 1000 graduate students, and grants approximately 450 undergraduate degrees per year. The School has become synonymous with innovation and outstanding accomplishment in engineering research, education, global engagement, and entrepreneurship. The School of Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University is well-known for its breadth and strength in experiential engineering education and has significant resources in this area. The School has numerous formal instructional courses and lab facilities covering Systems Measurements, Control, Mechatronics, Fluid Mechanics, Heat Transfer, Solid Mechanics, Manufacturing, and Internal Combustion. Most of these course labs incorporate an open-ended design project for students to demonstrate principles of the field as well. The undergraduate program culminates in a Capstone design course with a true design, build, and test structure. To support the desire to incorporate project-based learning, the School provides a large 3D print lab, a full machine shop with manual and CNC equipment, an electronics fab studio, and a general purpose making/assembly lab. Professional staff, including electrical and mechanical design engineers, manage these facilities and will train and assist students as needed. This coupling of professional staff allows the program to scale the hands-on experience to all students.

The School is an integral part of Purdue’s College of Engineering. Purdue Engineering is one of the largest and top-ranked engineering colleges in the nation (2nd public college for engineering, 3rd for online graduate engineering programs, 4th for graduate programs, 6th in the world for utility patents, and 9th for undergraduate programs) and renowned for top-notch faculty, students, unique research facilities, and a culture of collegiality and excellence. The College goal of Pinnacle of Excellence at Scale is guiding strategic growth in new directions, by investing in people, exciting initiatives, and facilities.
