VPUE is seeking an Associate Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, Director of Stanford Introductory Studies (SIS) with a primary role of providing strategic direction and developing long-range plans for SIS programs that embody Stanford's commitment to liberal education. The AVP leads programs that provide all undergraduates with an introduction to college level learning, engaging with faculty, and developing the skills and educational values that undergird the rest of their college careers. In this role, you will work closely with faculty across the university in delivering excellent educational opportunities, mentor and support post-doctoral instructors, and supervise administrative staff in SIS. Programs include Stanford Introductory Seminars; Thinking Matters/Education as Self Fashioning (ESF); Sophomore College/ Arts Intensive; and two residentially based integrated living-learning environments or ILEs —Structured Liberal Education (SLE) and Immersion in the Arts (ITALIC). The Director reports to the SIS Faculty Director with a dotted line to the Vice Provost of Undergraduate Education. https://undergrad.stanford.edu/about/contact-us/vpue-program-offices/stanford-introductory-studies In this role you will: Lead SIS programs by setting educational and administrative goals and priorities; conceptualize, implement and direct activities, initiatives, and innovations that achieve those goals and priorities Develop, plan and negotiate annual comprehensive budget proposal for SIS; determine other resource allocations in support of SIS programs Identify and resolve complex problems that jeopardize the excellence of SIS instruction and curriculum Direct staff and provide leadership to achieve goals and the vision of the SIS organization, including supervision of 25+ lecturers/academic staff Oversee all aspects of the Post-doctoral Thinking Matters Fellowship Supervise senior SIS staff in directing appropriate administrative support to all levels of SIS, including IT, finance, space, equipment and facilities, personnel, course administration, student services, and all other administrative duties Direct strategic planning for long- and short-term direction of the curriculum Demonstrate pedagogical leadership through identification and dissemination of best practices to faculty and lecturers, including overseeing the design and organization of instructor workshops Set agenda for faculty governing and advisory boards and other committees, in conjunction with faculty director; oversee production of background materials and analytical studies that inform Boards' policy decisions and respond to Faculty Senate legislation Oversee regular and intermittent program assessments for purposes of strategic planning and program improvement, including but not limited to Faculty Senate mandated reports and studies Oversee communications with faculty and academic staff regarding program policies, course assignments, pedagogical consultations, staff and student services, honoraria, contractual obligations, and a range of other issues and topics Oversee systematic administrative processes for solicitation and review of courses; production of student and faculty outreach publications; and student application and assignment Other duties may also be assigned, not all unique aspects of this job are covered by this job posting.
