The College of Medicine – Tucson (COM-T) is inviting applications from innovative academic neurosurgeons to serve as Chair of the college’s recently established Department of Neurosurgery. Reporting directly to Dean Michael M.I. Abecassis, the chair will work collaboratively with the leaders of COM-T and Banner University Medicine to build upon excellence in existing clinical, teaching and team-based research programs to position the department for growth and transformation. The chair will have the opportunity to enhance the subspecialty clinical offerings of the department by providing the continuum of tertiary neurosurgical services, with particular opportunities to grow the minimally invasive spine surgery, skull base surgery, and pediatric neurosurgery services. This physician leader will provide strategic leadership and direction for the growth of the clinical enterprise. Such growth will support the expansion of research and education. The leader will have the ability to build a program within the larger context of a growing regional health care system. The chair will evaluate and leverage department strengths to expand the UArizona/Banner Health footprint, expand relationships and partnerships with community providers, recruit and retain talented faculty and prepare the department for the changing healthcare landscape. The chair will be responsible for the clinical growth, research advancement, teaching excellence of the department and enhancement of the national reputation. The chair will also focus on efforts to expand the clinical footprint, optimize use of existing space, foster philanthropic development and manage resources across the enterprise. This physician leader will provide strategic and tactical leadership for all aspects of the department within the College of Medicine - Tucson including corresponding services at Banner University Medicine’s Tucson facilities. Duties and responsibilities: Establish a vision, tactical strategy and business model with the appropriate operating infrastructure to ensure clinical operations are effective, service oriented and efficient. Develop, maintain and expand high-quality clinical services and programs at Banner – University Medicine affiliated teaching hospitals and clinics to allow for the Department of Neurosurgery to be recognized as the market leader and premier provider of neurosurgical services in the region. Provide leadership that promotes professional development of existing faculty members and attracts highly-motivated and exceptional faculty, staff and trainees to the department. Ensure the department is recruiting the best faculty and staff to meet its strategic goals. Coach, mentor and develop others to build internal leadership capabilities for succession. Develop the next generation of physician leadership in the department. Foster a culture of interdisciplinary research through collaboration with affiliated departments and centers and expand an infrastructure that fosters research productivity. Establish appropriate communication channels with faculty, staff and administration that result in trust, alignment and collaborative working relationships in the pursuit of improved department cohesion and team environment. Develop key institutional partnerships and strategic relationships and define and pursue interdisciplinary clinical and research goals that align with the university, health sciences, COM-T, and Banner Health strategic goals. Create, implement and maintain defined standard objectives for clinical operation quality, surgical outcomes, patient access, financial targets and volume growth. Oversee departmental budgeting and resource management, meet departmental financial goals, and enact policies and processes that promote fiscal accountability and responsibility. As the educational leader of the department, ensure an excellent teaching program for the students, residents, and fellows who are receiving education and training within the department. Identify new and expand existing sources of funding, including extramural clinical and translational research grants, philanthropy and clinical revenue. Develop partnerships in the region to enhance the clinical operations and ensure a high value experience for patients and referring providers. Monitor and consistently work to improve clinical quality. Serve as a spokesperson and advocate for the department, both in the university, across Banner Health and in the community. Assure implementation of university policies pertaining to faculty governance and evaluation and actively enhance diversity. Be accountable for compliance with Joint Commission, federal and state accreditation requirements, as well as compliance with university and college policies and procedures.
