Gonzaga University, a Catholic comprehensive liberal arts university sponsored by the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits), seeks an innovative, collaborative, and dynamic leader to serve as its next Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. The new Dean of the College will join an exceptional community of teachers and scholars in an institution committed to carrying Jesuit higher education powerfully into the future through cultivating excellence and innovation rooted in that tradition.
The College of Arts and Sciences is the University's oldest and largest school and is widely recognized as the heart of its undergraduate educational program. The College enrolls over 2,100 students and offers 35 undergraduate majors and 40 minors across 21 departments. Master's of Arts degrees are offered in Theology & Leadership and Philosophy. The College's 261 full-time faculty are internationally recognized in fields spanning the arts, sciences, and social sciences.
The new Dean will be responsible for the academic leadership of the College of Arts & Sciences and for ensuring excellence in all of the College's programs. The Dean will also be responsible for the effective management of the College's human and fiscal resources and for developing a five- to seven-year plan for the College's continued growth and development. The Dean will report to the Provost & Senior Vice President and serve on the Provost's Council. The successful candidate will be one who joins with colleague Deans, the Provost, and other senior administrators to form a cohesive leadership team for the university; supports the mission of Gonzaga University as a Jesuit, Catholic, and humanistic institution; and commits to embody the university mission in the programs as well as in the overall operation of the College.
An earned doctorate in a discipline within the College of Arts & Sciences and an academic, scholarly record meriting an appointment with tenure at the rank of Full Professor in the College is required. The successful applicant will possess a record of increasing administrative leadership and responsibility. The new Dean will have not just an active commitment to diversifying the faculty, staff, and student body, but a proven track record of such work. The new Dean will need to demonstrate an ability to build rapport with internal and external stakeholders and cultivate collaboration, inclusion, and constructive dialogue in all aspects of leading the College. The city of Spokane, whose slogan is Creative by Nature, is close to 76 lakes, five skiing areas, 20 golf courses, and abundant hiking and rock-climbing locales. Multiple music venues, live theater and Broadway plays, the Spokane Symphony, and two professional sports teams add a lively spirit to the mix. The city's population is growing. It now stands at more than 220,000 in the city and 560,000 in the Greater Spokane Metropolitan Area. Significantly, the region is a focal point for developing industries, particularly those related to aerospace, manufacturing, and healthcare. Gonzaga is an integral part of the University District in Spokane, in which research and educational opportunities, in collaboration with other universities, abound.
