Short answer: adjunct professors were paid an average of $4,093 for a standard three-credit course in 2024-25, according to the American Association of University Professors (AAUP), and CUPA-HR's median was $1,166 per credit hour, or $3,498 a course. The 2026-27 pay scales published by 28 colleges on our map run from $1,485 to $12,201 per course. Hover over the map to see examples from your state.

Adjunct pay at a glance
In this guide
AAUP's annual survey of 428 colleges found that part-time faculty were paid an average of $4,093 per three-credit course section in 2024-25. That was unchanged from the year before, so it fell after inflation. The median starting rate was $3,130: nearly one in five colleges start adjuncts above $5,000, but 70 percent start them at $4,000 or less.
CUPA-HR, the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources, surveyed 43,279 adjuncts at 263 institutions and puts the median at $1,166 per credit hour, or $3,498 per course. Doctoral universities pay a median $1,265 per credit hour and associate's colleges $1,028, a gap of $711 per course.

In specialized cases, minimums fall below $1,000 and maximums top $30,000 per course, so compare an offer with similar colleges, not only with the national average.
Because pay is per course, your yearly income depends on how many sections you teach. At the AAUP average, two courses a term in fall and spring bring in $16,372 before taxes, and four a term $32,744. CUPA-HR estimates that a full-time-equivalent load of 36 credit hours pays under $42,000 at the median rate; only about 7 percent of adjuncts teach as their full-time job. Try your own numbers:

Hours include class time, preparation, grading and office hours, over a 15-week term. Change any number.
At nine hours a week per course over a 15-week term, the average course works out to about $30 an hour, and a course you teach for the first time takes longer. Ask how the pay arrives, too: Collin College in Texas, for example, pays fall courses in four equal monthly installments from September to December.
Averages hide how differently colleges pay. We collected the adjunct pay scales that 28 colleges in 26 states publish for 2026-27 or fall 2026: rate sheets, board-approved salary schedules, union contracts, handbooks and, for three colleges, their own job postings. Each is converted to a standard three-credit course. Hover over a state, or tap it on a phone, to see the colleges.

| 26 | Missouri | $1,988 | $1,950 | $2,025 |
The highest rates come mostly from union contracts at public universities. Rutgers pays new part-time lecturers at least $2,777 per credit, or $8,331 a course, and the University of Hawaii $2,053 to $2,881 per credit. SUNY's minimum rose by $1,000 in July 2026, to $5,500 or $6,000 per course depending on the campus.
The lowest starting rates, under $2,100 a course, are at South Florida State College, Tallahassee State College and Moberly Area Community College in Missouri, and at Southeastern Oklahoma State University for instructors with a bachelor's degree. All four set adjunct pay in college schedules rather than union contracts, mostly by degree.
Treat the map as examples, not state averages: one college can sit far from its neighbors, and several figures are minimums that departments may exceed. Fourteen states and the District of Columbia also require pay ranges in job ads, so more adjunct postings now show the rate; see pay transparency laws for job ads.

In CUPA-HR's survey, the provost's office sets adjunct pay at 56 percent of institutions, human resources and union contracts at 12 percent each, and departments at 7 percent. Contracts produce the highest rates:
| Who sets the rate | Median per credit hour | Per three-credit course |
|---|---|---|
| Union contract | $1,545 | $4,635 |
| Provost's office | $1,133 | $3,399 |
| Academic department | $1,083 | $3,249 |
| Human resources | $1,076 | $3,228 |
| President or board | $963 | $2,889 |
A union contract sets rates several years ahead. Wayne State's 2026-29 contract raises its per-credit minimums 2 percent in fall 2026 and again in fall 2027; Vermont State University's adds $45 per credit each year through 2028-29.
Most scales also vary the rate: more than half of institutions pay differently by education level, discipline or program level. The published scales show the usual patterns:
Check the unit, too. Some colleges pay per weekly contact hour or workload unit rather than per credit: Community College of Denver counts a lecture credit as 1.2 work units and pays more for labs and clinicals.
CUPA-HR found the highest adjunct pay in architecture, engineering, legal professions, area and group studies, the health professions and business, and the lowest in recreation and fitness, security and protective services, history, education and English. Psychology pays 97 percent of the median.
The fields that pay least also rely most on adjuncts. Adjuncts make up 32 percent of faculty in the liberal arts and humanities and 23 percent in education, but 3 percent in engineering and 6 percent in the physical sciences.
Most adjuncts get no benefits. Nearly 87 percent of institutions hire per-course faculty, AAUP found, and nearly 70 percent of those provide neither retirement nor medical benefits. Associate's colleges do better: 53.8 percent contribute to retirement for some or all of their adjuncts and 48.9 percent to medical premiums. CUPA-HR puts the share offering adjuncts health benefits at 37 percent.
The Affordable Care Act treats an employee who averages 30 hours of service a week as full-time. IRS rules let colleges credit adjuncts with 2 1/4 hours for each classroom hour plus any required time outside class, so about 13 1/3 classroom hours a week reaches 30.
Colleges count differently: Appalachian State credits three hours a week per credit hour, so ten credit hours make an adjunct eligible for health coverage. Many colleges cap loads below the line; the Maine Community College System limits adjuncts to 12 credit or instructional hours a semester unless a college president approves more.
Ask about smaller benefits as well. Sinclair Community College in Ohio advertises a 14 percent employer contribution to the state teachers' retirement system and free tuition for up to three credit hours a semester, and Minnesota State universities let adjunct faculty take courses without paying tuition.

Placement is often where you have room to ask: if you hold a doctorate or have taught elsewhere, ask whether it counts toward a higher step. Our guide on how to become an adjunct professor covers applications and first courses.

It depends on how many courses you teach. At the average rate, four courses a year pay $16,372 and eight pay $32,744 before taxes. A full-time-equivalent load at CUPA-HR's median pays under $42,000.
CUPA-HR's median is $1,166: $1,265 at doctoral universities, $1,028 at associate's colleges and $1,545 where a union contract sets pay. In 2026-27 the College of Southern Nevada pays $925 and Minnesota State universities at least $1,888.
Usually not: nearly 70 percent of colleges that hire per-course faculty offer them neither retirement nor medical benefits (AAUP). The Affordable Care Act treats 30 hours of service a week as full-time, which is why many colleges cap adjunct loads.
The rate is often fixed by a scale or contract, but your step, credit for past teaching, pay above a contract minimum, course development fees and the number of sections are all worth asking about.
Not always. Valencia College's part-time rates apply in all modalities, and BYU pays online sections the same as daytime ones. Some colleges pay less online: Vermont State University Online pays $1,182 to $1,545 per credit in 2026-27.
