Job Description:

Under the direction of the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, the Dean is the principal academic leader for the University Libraries, and as part of the University's leadership team, advances the University mission and strategic action plan. The Dean provides leadership, strategic direction, and management of library staff, services, collections, programming, assessment, budgeting, and performance review. The Dean builds communities of practice and interest across campus and actively seeks both resources and external support for the library's initiatives, including but not limited to promoting information literacy across the curriculum, the use of digital methods and technologies in the classroom, and the support of open access. The Dean is committed to the advancement of the University and the Library's diversity goals.

Essential Functions/Characteristics

  • Oversees all services, operations, and facilities of the University Libraries. Provides budget oversight and strategic management of resources for library collections, services and programming.
  • Develops and implements the library's strategic plan consistent with the University mission and plan.
  • Collaborates with the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, academic deans, and university leaders to ensure relevant and successful library services in support of university goals and academic programs.
  • Regularly reviews and assesses library programs, resources, facilities, and equipment to ensure their continuing effectiveness.
  • Evaluates the performance of direct reports, making recommendations, as appropriate, regarding promotion, tenure, and continuing employment.
  • Works with the Library Program Director to plan and support endowed programs and other library public events and exhibits.
  • Provides professional and staff development opportunities for all library staff.
  • Collaborates with the director of the RWU School of Law Library to cooperatively enable access to resources and services for faculty and students between all campus libraries.
  • Collaborate with other academic units to support and sustain vital research and teaching and to strengthen the learning community.
  • Demonstrate commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion for the University Libraries that fosters an environment supportive of all members of the RWU campus and community.
  • Promote and advocate for a student-centric, service-based culture within the University Libraries.
  • Collaborate with university advancement team on fundraising initiatives and cultivation of donors.

Preferred and Required Qualifications

Job Requirements:

  • M.L.S./M.L.I.S. degree from an A.L.A. accredited library school.
  • Scholarly qualifications enabling performance at the full professor level.
  • Record of active scholarly activity or professional leadership in library and information science.
  • Demonstrated experience working cooperatively with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • History of successful work collaborating with internal and external partners to advance initiatives.
  • Evidence of professional and pedagogical commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Successful record of leadership in academic or research library administration.
  • Experience with the application of information technology in all aspects of academic library operations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Five years of experience related to the position.
  • Doctorate in library and information science, education, or a related field.
  • Experience with budget preparation and oversight.
  • Experience with library space planning.
  • Record of successful grant preparation and fundraising.

At the University's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be accepted where the candidate can demonstrate, to the satisfaction of the University, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.
