POSITION SUMMARY

The laboratory studies the molecular networks that play important roles in cancer and human disease. The laboratory has a diverse set of research programs that have been catalyzed by computational analyses of biological systems. The laboratory is looking for one (or more) parttime Research Assistants who have the ability to work independently and perform rigorous and reproducible experiments that can test these hypotheses. A Research Assistant II needs to have prior experience designing and trouble-shooting experiments successfully. Additionally, the candidate will have strong experience in at least one of the following areas:

a) Cell signaling

b) Cancer cell biology

c) Protein biochemistry

d) Mouse models of cancer

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

(100%) Research Support

  • Perform experiments under general to limited supervision.
  • Manage independent projects and work toward timely, reproducible, satisfactory completion.
  • Work with other member on research methods.
  • Pursue preliminary studies to establish feasibility of a project.
  • Troubleshoot experimental methods. • Validate reagents and methods.
  • Learn new methods, including how to perform the method, assessing strength and weaknesses and compare to other methods. Assist in bringing these methods in the lab for the Lab Coordinator to use. Other lab members will then learn from the lab coordinator.
  • Record Keeping
  • Expertise in at least one of the following four areas:


  • Cancer cell biology
  • Cell signaling
  • Protein biochemistry
  • Mouse models of cancer 

EXPERIENCE 

Required:

  • A minimum of 2-4 years of experience in a research laboratory
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to design experiments
  • Ability to trouble shoot experiments
  • Ability to interpret data

Preferred:

  • A minimum of 4-7 years of experience in a research laboratory

EDUCATION

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in biological sciences or related field.

Preferred

  • PhD or ability to work at a similar level in terms of independence and quality of work

SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Required

  • Theoretical and hands on knowledge of histology and molecular biology techniques.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in researching information and analyzing data to arrive at valid conclusions.
  • Ability to manage and track large numbers of samples meticulously without mixup or cross contamination.
  • Skill in the operation and maintenance of various lab equipment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with both PC and MAC operating systems, standard business office equipment and commonly used software and tools, such as Microsoft Office, electronic mail, and the internet.
  • Proficiency with common office software applications as well as software applications used for research, recording, and analysis.
  • Highly organized, effective at multitasking, adept at juggling changing priorities and able to prioritize.
  • Proven ability to work both independently and also as part of a collaborative team.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including tact, diplomacy, and flexibility.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with diverse groups.
  • Demonstrated skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with personnel at all levels. 


SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Must be willing to work in an animal-related research environment.
  • Must be willing to work with human cells and complete all appropriate associated training.
  • Must be willing to work independently and must have a flexible schedule to support research needs.
  • Successful completion of the Institute’s background investigation.

 

Physical Requirements: 

This position requires constant adjusting focus, seeing, sitting and working inside.
