Job Description

This position is responsible for providing a program of research within the Animal Systems Research Group with an emphasis in small ruminant breeding and genetics. The ideal candidate will use modern techniques, such as marker assisted selection and SNP-chips, to identify and propagate production traits that are important for meat and dairy goat production. Opportunity exists to develop undergraduate and graduate course work in area of expertise. Conceptualizes, develops, and maintains an independent program of research in the Animal Sciences with emphasis on breeding and genetics in small ruminants.This is position is funded by a grant or restricted funds. Continued employment is contingent on the renewal of grant or restricted funding.

Responsibilities:

  • Conceptualizes, develops, and maintains an independent program of research in the Animal Sciences with emphasis on breeding and genetics in small ruminants.
  • Directs ongoing laboratory work; Supervises and guides specific activities of research support personnel
  • Participate in interdisciplinary and collaboration with other scientists constituting the animal systems group.
  • Conducts regular laboratory meetings and participates in program development and program enhancement.
  • Engages in grantsmanship to increase external support for programmatic activities.
  • Writes research reports documenting laboratory activities and findings
  • Participates in professional/scientific meetings; and Disseminates research to various CAHS stakeholders.
  • Observes University and CAHS administrative policies to insure full compliance with mandated training and implementation of the institutional program for animal care and use; engages in grantsmanship to increase external support for programmatic activities
  • Performs other duties as assigned.



Required Education and Experience:

  • Ph.D. in an applicable field
  • Six years of related experience



Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of appropriate laboratory and technical equipment.
  • Knowledge of statistical analyses and statistical analyses software.
    Knowledge of research in practical and/or basic sciences and scientific publications.
  • Ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
  • Ability to present information clearly and concisely.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
