The Department of Art and Design at Augusta University is seeking applicants for an academic year, Lecturer in Art History. The preferred candidate will be expected to teach up to five courses per semester at all levels of undergraduate art history. We seek candidates who are interested in the full range of global art histories, theories, and methodologies and who value interdisciplinary learning approaches. Our ideal candidate brings expertise in 20th-century and contemporary art, lens-based histories, and visual culture. As our department has grown into areas such as animation, filmmaking, graphic design, and performance studies, we also seek candidates with an interest in expanding the scope of our art history curriculum to reflect some of those areas. This is a non-tenure-track faculty position (9-month contract) with duties anticipated to begin in August 2024.



Teach up to five courses per semester at all levels of undergraduate art history. These will include courses within the Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) and Bachelor of Arts (BA) concentrations.


Required Qualifications

MA or MA candidates in Art History or equivalent degree in the appropriate discipline or its equivalent in training, ability, or experience.


Required faculty employment qualifications for all USG institutions and all academic ranks within these institutions shall be:


- Consistent with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)'s requirements for institutional accreditation;


- Evidence of ability as a teacher;


- Evidence of activity as a scholar and ability in all other duties assigned;


- Successful experience (which will necessarily be waived for those just entering the academic profession who meet all other requirements); and,


- Desirable personal qualities judged on the basis of personal interview, complete biographical data, and recommendations.


Preferred Qualifications

  • PHD in Art History or equivalent degree in the appropriate discipline or its equivalent in training, ability, or experience
  • Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with students, faculty, administration, and community members.


  • Active publication record.


  • A demonstrated engagement with critical and theoretical issues in Contemporary Art.



This position is academic year based and typically works August through May, depending on dates outlined in offer letter and yearly contract.


The intended work commitment or full-time equivalent (FTE) for this position is 1.0.


Lecturer: $46,000 - $50,000- Compensation is commensurate with education, experience, and achievements. The salary is subject to availability of funds.
