Job Summary
The College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific and the Graduate College of Biomedical Sciences at Western University of Health Sciences (WesternU) invite applications for a tenure-system faculty position in the area of cell and molecular biology and pathophysiology and immunomodulation of diseases in translational research, primarily in the field of cardiovascular and musculoskeletal diseases. Candidates must have earned a Ph.D. in Clinical & Translational Science, Immunology, Biomedical Engineering, Biomedicine or related fields, with research expertise in cell and molecular biology, pathophysiology and immunomodulation of disease process and translational research approaches.

The position will be filled initially at the non-tenure track Assistant Professor level, and upon success will be considered for tenure-track. The candidate is expected to establish a sustainable research program; make significant scholarly contributions to translational research in cardiovascular diseases, particularly in atherosclerotic diseases, plaque instability, intimal hyperplasia and restenosis; further develop the discipline; be an effective teacher and mentor of graduate and postgraduate students in health sciences; and engage in institutional and professional service. Other duties and responsibilities will be as agreed upon with the Senior Vice President for Research, the Deans (or designees) in the colleges of Osteopathic Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, and the Head of the Department of Translational Research. The position will require developing inter-disciplinary translational research projects in collaboration with other WesternU faculty members. The applicant is expected to secure extramural funding from NIH and other federal agencies within two years.

We at Western University of Health Sciences are interested in developing strong programs for basic and translational applications, with a focus on cell and molecular biology and pathophysiology in cardiovascular and musculoskeletal diseases in an interdisciplinary manner. The position will require collaboration with other WesternU faculty members to develop new research programs in Translational Research and Biotechnology. The research focus can range from gaining a deeper understanding of processes at the cellular and molecular level, with emphasis on cell and molecular biology, and identifying targets for developing better treatment strategies using clinically relevant animal models.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Extramural research funding awards to WesternU in fiscal year 2020 exceeded $5 million, reflecting continued growth in the research enterprise. The mission of WesternU is to develop strong multidisciplinary and collaborative discovery through cross-cutting basic and applied/translational research.

Therefore, exceptional candidates who can develop such a program and teach classes in Molecular Medicine and Pathophysiology and Immunomodulation of Diseases and related subjects are invited to apply. A startup package will provide the basis for establishing an independent research program. Exceptional candidates who can develop such a program and also teach classes in Molecular Medicine, Pathophysiology and Immunomodulation of Diseases, and Clinical and Translational Research Design and Methods and related subjects are especially encouraged to apply.

Review of applications will begin immediately, and the position will remain open until filled. It is expected that a qualified candidate will start the position in January 2021.

Required Qualifications
Ph.D. in Life Sciences/Clinical & Translational Science/ Biotechnology/Biomedical Sciences with at least 3 years of research experience in cell and molecular biology, pathophysiology and immunomodulation of cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, and other diseases, as evidenced by strong publication record.

Preferred Qualifications
Preference will be given to applicants who have obtained the highest degree within the last 5-7 years, have proven experience in the immunomodulation and pathophysiology of cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, and other diseases, molecular signaling and transgenic mice, designing and performing experiments using biopsy tissues and whole animal model to investigate biological and pathological processes at the cellular and molecular level.
