Position Description:

The Research Assistant II position is a part of a growing research team focused on understanding the genetic and neural control of animal behavior. Under the supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI), incumbent will support roles within the laboratory, execute experiments and administer daily lab duties outlined by the PI. The administration of lab duties includes monitoring of inventory and maintenance of transgenic fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) strains. Additional tasks include data-mining from genome sequence database, generating and verifying DNA constructs, and monitoring of lifespan and ageing-related physiological changes of flies. The Research Assistant II may conduct behavior assays and creation of transgenic and mutant strains of Drosophila to aid experiments of the PI, students and postdocs of the laboratory. Demonstrated skills to conduct experiment in the lab and to keep records are essential. The Research Assistant II will need to communicate with various personnel in and outside of the laboratory for the smooth operation of scientific research.
Education:

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in biological sciences or related field.

Experience:

Required:

  • 1-3 years’ experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated experience and application of molecular biology knowledge in nucleic acid (RNA and DNA) extraction from biological samples, designing, cloning, and verification of DNA constructs.
  • Demonstrated experience with general laboratory maintenance, including cleaning, stocking supply inventory, and ensuring the maintenance of a sterile environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in performing DNA sequencing and analyzing sequencing data using a software (such as SnapGene, MacVector, DNASTAR etc.) and online genome database for model organisms (Ensembl, FlyBase, UCSC Genome Browser etc.)

Preferred:

  • Demonstrated experience in handling of Drosophila melanogaster and/or other arthropod species in the lab.
  • Demonstrated experience in basic operation of database software such as Excel and Filemaker.
  • Demonstrated experience and application of immunohistochemistry.

Special Requirements:
  • Must be willing to work in an animal-related research environment.
  • Must be willing to work a flexible schedule to support research needs.
  • Successful completion of the Institute’s background investigation.

Physical Requirements:

This role requires constant adjusting focus, seeing, sitting and working inside.
