The Research Assistant II is responsible for research support and some lab management duties in support of the Principal Investigator’s (PI) studies along with duties involving molecular biology, biochemistry, protein production, purification, and some tissue culture work. Duties include performing advanced molecular biology, biochemistry, and cell biology techniques, assisting the postdoctoral associates with experimental design and direction, assisting in hiring new staff, supervising lab staff (junior technicians, students and volunteers), training staff in molecular biology, biochemistry, and cell biology techniques and all other techniques as necessary, equipment upkeep and repair, ensuring compliance with all Salk policies, working with collaborators to achieve specific research goals, and managing any scientific or interpersonal issues that may arise. The RA II is also responsible for all lab materials including plasmid DNA, DNA and custom primer data, chemical inventory list, and freezer/fridge contents. Assists PI with budget management, department ordering, act as lab representative/point person regarding lab issues, and ensuring lab safety.
Works on problems in which analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of various factors. Exercises judgement within broadly defined practices and policies in selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. May determine methods and procedures on new assignments. May provide supervision, training and guidance to lower level personnel. Work is done under periodic supervision.
