Assistant Professor of Gender, Women's, and Sexuality Studies (GWS)

Tenure Status: Tenure Track

Minimum Qualifications
Candidates should have recent, ongoing scholarship in gender, women’s, and/or sexuality studies; experience teaching or potential to teach courses with content or methods consistent with gender, women’s, and/or sexuality studies; and a Ph.D. in gender, women’s, and/or sexuality studies—or in a related field with demonstrated commitment to gender, women’s, and/or sexuality studies. ABD applicants will be considered for this position, but evidence of successful defense of the dissertation must be received by July 31 for a fall hire.

Areas of Interest (No Minimum Level Required)
Interdisciplinary scholar-teachers with expertise in queer and or/trans studies, transnational feminisms, and/or the interface of ethnic studies fields and the study of gender and sexuality are especially encouraged to apply.

Description of the Department or Unit
Appalachian State University’s program in GWS is the oldest such program in the University of North Carolina system. It has a thriving undergraduate major and minors in GWS, LGBT Studies, and Girls’ Studies, as well as a graduate minor and certificate in GWS, all served by reasonably-sized courses. We are committed to supporting each other in the production of high-quality interdisciplinary and intersectional scholarship, as well as to engaging teaching that equips our students to be adept, creative thinkers who are prepared to thoroughly analyze and offer solutions to pressing social justice issues.
GWS is located in IDS, one of 17 departments in the College of Arts and Sciences. IDS houses BA programs in GWS and Global Studies, a BA and BS program in Interdisciplinary Studies, an MA in Appalachian Studies, 13 interdisciplinary minors, and the premier living-learning community at Appalachian State, the Watauga Residential College.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Tenure-track and tenured faculty members typically teach three classes per semester. Our new colleague will teach courses in their area of specialization and also contribute to our popular offerings such as the introductory course in GWS, “Sex, Gender, and Power,” “Introduction to LGBT Studies,” or “Global Women’s Issues.” Faculty maintain active peer-reviewed research agendas and participate fully in the life of the program, department, and university.
