The Director of Campus Recreation is part of the Student Activities and RecSports team within the Division of Student Life.  This position provides leadership and vision for the University’s recreational sports program and clearly demonstrates an understanding of the role that recreation plays in student and leadership development.  This position is responsible for supporting and providing assistance in day-to-day operations, scheduling all intramural, fitness, Esports, club sports and open recreational activities, management of department facilities, budget management and operating the recreation equipment rental program.  This position works closely with students, faculty, and staff to initiate, plan, develop, and facilitate events and activities to enhance the quality of student life and university experience for all members of the Carroll community. 

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, implement, and assess a comprehensive recreation program which delivers quality and diverse opportunities.
  • Supervise the full-time Esports and Competitive Sports Coordinator and part-time Cheer and Dance head and assistant coaches.
  • Recruit, hire, train, and supervise the Campus Recreation student staff, totaling approximately 100 student employees, annually.
  • Provide leadership, organization, budget management, and supervision for all aspects of recreational programming on campus.
  • Develop, implement, and assess departmental goals and initiatives.
  • Responsible for oversight of the RecSports Fitness Center, Pioneer Fitness Center, and Carroll Esports Center, to include access control, risk management, operational hours, preventative maintenance, equipment purchases, and facility policies.
  • Manage the club sport, intramural, drop-in recreation, group fitness, and equipment rental programs.
  • Monitor all strength training and cardiovascular equipment and manage the equipment leasing process.
  • Maintain the indoor and outdoor equipment rental program.
  • Actively coordinate and/or participate in appropriate Carroll University committees, task forces, and professional associations and conferences.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Education and/or Experience:

  • Master's degree required in Recreation Management, College Student Personnel Administration, Sport Management or related field.
  • Two (2) - Five (5) years of GA/professional experience at a college or university in recreation required.
  • Current First Aid, CPR and AED certifications.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collegially with staff and faculty.
  • Demonstrated commitment to anti-racist work and a proven track-record of diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging work.
  • Excellent leadership, organization, interpersonal, and oral/written/presentations skills.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to work evening and weekend hours.

Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to work effectively with people regardless of their age, gender, race, sexual orientation, ethnicity, religion, ability, socio-economic background, or job type.
  • The ability to enthusiastically and positively promote the University and its recreational programs is essential.
  • Ability to function effectively with the Student Life staff and the entire campus community as a collaborative, team player.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Sensitivity to the needs of students and an understanding of their overall educational goals as well as the academic mission of the University.
  • Ability to serve as a positive role model to students and to demonstrate productive, professional behavior at all times.
