The South Dakota State University School of Design invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Architecture to begin no later than August, 2025. This is a full time, nine-month, benefit eligible appointment and the position reports to the Director of the School of Design. The position is typically 60% teaching, 30% research, scholarship and creative activity and 10% service.   South Dakota State University promotes access to and opportunities for all to receive the benefit of and participate in education, research, and service and is especially interested in candidates that can contribute to this land-grant mission of access.

The School of Design has three accredited-built environment majors: architecture, landscape architecture and interior design. The School of Design also includes the visual arts:  graphic design, and studio arts. Collectively, School faculty form a collaborative teaching and research environment that values cross-program and interdisciplinary initiatives. The successful candidate will contribute to building national and international stature and recognition for the discipline, School and University.

SDSU offers a 4-year Bachelor of Fine Arts in Architecture and a 2-year NAAB accredited Masters of Architecture degree. Architecture has a unique mandate to remain a small program of no more than 220 students, making it one of the smallest architecture programs in the USA working within a fabric of small agrarian and mining cities.  https://www.sdstate.edu/architecture 

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Teach courses within the professional curriculum, such as design studios, lectures, seminars, and workshops.
  • Carry out a dynamic and robust agenda of research, scholarship and creative activity.
  • Extend research/scholarship/creative activity agenda into the teaching environment.
  • Provide service to the discipline, university, and community.
  • Teach in multi-disciplinary courses within the School of Design.

DISCIPLINARY CONTENT AREAS:  

Architectural building design, technology, sustainable construction, studio pedagogy, design process, and professional practice.

 

SALARY:

Preferred and Required Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Professional degree in Architecture for international equivalent by time of appointment.
  • PhD in Architecture or a related field by time of appointment.
  • Potential to develop and teach academic coursework in one or more of the disciplinary content areas.
  • Potential to develop a peer-reviewed research/scholarship/creative activity agenda in the discipline.
  • Effective written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Professional experience in Architecture or a related design field.
  • Record of peer-reviewed research/scholarship/creative activity.
