Job Description
The Department of Renewable Resources (https://www.ualberta.ca/renewable-resources/) in the Faculty of Agricultural, Life & Environmental Sciences at the University of Alberta is inviting applications for an Assistant Professor level in the field of Plant/Tree Physiology/Ecophysiology. This is a full-time tenure-track academic appointment.
The successful candidate will be expected to establish an innovative fundamental and applied research program, focusing on plant physiological responses to climate extremes and climate change, abiotic and biotic stressors, silvicultural treatments, land degradation, and/or other environmental stress factors over a range of ecosystem scales. The successful candidate is expected to build a nationally competitive research program supported by extramural grants. The candidate will have the freedom to explore research questions and initiate projects aligned with their expertise and interests. Teaching responsibilities typically include teaching two undergraduate courses related to plant structure and function and/or plant ecophysiology. Additionally, the candidate will be expected to develop a graduate-level course in ecophysiology that can be taught to undergraduate students as well. Other responsibilities will include recruiting and mentoring graduate students, serving the College of Natural and Applied Sciences and the university as a whole, and engaging with private and government stakeholders.
Preferred and Required Qualifications
Candidates must hold a PhD in plant/tree or ecophysiology or related fields. Applicants should demonstrate strong training and research experience in fundamental and applied aspects of plant/tree physiology or plant/tree ecophysiology, with skills in a wide range of field and laboratory methods, such as metabolomics and molecular approaches, being an asset. We also welcome applicants with non-traditional pathways to an academic career in Canada.
Candidates must have already completed their PhD by July 1, 2024. Postdoctoral experience would be an asset in demonstrating research excellence. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
A demonstrated record of scholarly publication, extramural funding, and teaching at the university level is required. As part of our undergraduate programs and associated faculty, candidates who can bridge the fields of environmental sciences, land reclamation and forest restoration, forestry, and soil sciences are highly desirable.
