The College of Science and Mathematics at Augusta University invites applications for a tenure-track position in Neuroscience to begin in Fall 2024 at a rank of Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor as commensurate with experience. In Fall 2023, the College initiated a new interdisciplinary Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience to complement a University-wide research initiative in this area, the Transdisciplinary Research Initiative in Inflammaging and Brain Aging (TRIBA, https://www.augusta.edu/research/triba/) and an existing PhD program in Neuroscience. A candidate qualified to serve at the level of professor or associate professor may be interested in taking on additional duties as the Program Director of the Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience. The field of research within neuroscience is open with an expectation that candidates will establish a vibrant and fundable research program that demonstrates originality in addressing significant questions. Successful applicants will have a commitment to teaching and mentoring students.



Responsibilities

Teaching - 40%
Teach courses in neuroscience and/or curriculum of disciplinary area

Service - 10%
Provide service to the university and profession

Scholarship - 50%
Establish a self-sustaining research program to conduct impactful research including mentorship of students, grant writing, and publication in peer-reviewed journals





Required Qualifications

Doctorate in psychology, biology, chemistry, physics, neuroscience, or related field; postdoctoral research experience



Grant writing experience; teaching experience; administrative or leadership experience



Assistant Professor- Early level career as a faculty member with appropriate post graduate training



Associate Professor- Mid level career faculty member with at least five years at rank of Assistant Professor or comparable training, background, and experience.



Professor- Senior level career faculty member with at least five years at the rank of Associate Professor or comparable training, background, and experience.



Candidates for Associate Professor or Professor should have a distinguished record of teaching and research to include extramural funding.



Required faculty employment qualifications for all USG institutions and all academic ranks within these institutions shall be:


  • Consistent with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) requirements for institutional accreditation;

  • Evidence of ability as a teacher;

  • Evidence of activity as a scholar and ability in all other duties assigned;

  • Successful experience (which will necessarily be waived for those just entering the academic profession who meet all other requirements); and,

  • Desirable personal qualities judged on the basis of personal interview, complete biographical data, and recommendations.



Shift/Salary/Benefits

This position is academic year based and typically works August through May, depending on dates outlined in offer letter and yearly contract.

The intended work commitment or full-time equivalent (FTE) for this position is 1.0.

Assistant Professor- Salary and compensation is commensurate with education, experience, and achievements. The salary is subject to availability of funds.



Associate Professor- Salary and compensation is commensurate with education, experience, and achievements. The salary is subject to availability of funds.



Professor- Salary and compensation is commensurate with education, experience, and achievements. The salary is subject to availability of funds.

College/Department Information

In 2021, most of the College of Science and Mathematics relocated to a newly-constructed building on the Health Sciences Campus in close proximity to the Medical College of Georgia, Dental College of Georgia, and Georgia Cancer Center. The proximity to colleagues on the Health Sciences Campus provides ample opportunities for the faculty to initiate and participate in cross-disciplinary collaboration and scientific discovery. A build-out of the top floor of the Science and Mathematics building, completed in Fall 2023, provides 28,765 square feet of research laboratories and support spaces. University support for research includes a dedicated research MRI and numerous core facilities for imaging, biomedical and chemical analysis, statistical analysis, small animal behavior, and high performance computing.
