The Medical College of Georgia (MCG) at Augusta University (AU) invites applications and nominations for the position of Chair of the Department of Cellular Biology and Anatomy. This is an exciting opportunity for a distinguished scientist to lead a department with a long legacy of innovation and excellence in education and research. The next Chair will have an opportunity to build upon the strong foundation of the department and craft a vision that will continue to foster discovery and excellence in basic science, translational research, and education. The Chair will report to the Dean and will serve as the department's academic and administrative leader, providing direction in educational programs; faculty recruitment and retention; faculty development; budget management and oversight; research; and strategic planning.

 



The successful candidate will be an internationally recognized researcher with a strong record of extramural support. They will also have administrative experience in leading basic science research groups and navigating a large university environment. The successful candidate must have exceptional interpersonal and communication skills and be able to work with a diverse group of constituents. The selected candidate must have dynamic leadership skills and administrative expertise and a demonstrated commitment to educational excellence.

 

The faculty member will have an accomplished research portfolio, a track record of recruitment, retention, and faculty development, and proven skills in mentoring faculty and students. Additionally, the faculty member will have service on national grant review study sections and national scientific professional organizations, a commitment to advancing the educational and research initiatives within the department, and the ability to collaborate across institutions to foster and uniquely broaden multidisciplinary research innovations.

 

The faculty member will have expertise in building strong internal and external relationships, a track record of working collaboratively to support the implementation of programs and initiatives, and an understanding of the organizational landscape and ability to anticipate critical issues, opportunities, and threats in the foreseeable future. This is a twelve-month, tenured/tenure-track faculty position. The selected candidate must be eligible for faculty appointment at the full Professor level.

 

 

 

 



Responsibilities

Lead the education and research missions of the department.

 

 



Oversee all departmental activities and ensure compliance with college, university, and Board of Regents (BOR) policies.

 

 



Lead efforts in building multidisciplinary programs.

 

 



Support and develop departmental education and research programs.

 

 



Recruitment and retention of departmental faculty.

 

 



Provide mentoring and support to promote career advancement and faculty development.

 

 



Cultivate relationships locally, statewide, and nationally.

 

 



Manage departmental administrative and budgetary operations.

 

 



Oversee the AU Body Donation program and the gross anatomy teaching facility.

 

 



Supervise the AU Electron Microscopy/Histology Core and the Cell Imaging Core.

 

 



Required Qualifications

Candidate must hold an MD, PhD, combination, and/or foreign equivalent.

 



Professor- Senior level career faculty member with at least five years at the rank of Associate Professor or comparable training, background, and experience.

 

 



Required faculty employment qualifications for all USG institutions and all academic ranks within these institutions shall be:

 



' Consistent with the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)'s requirements for institutional accreditation;

 



' Evidence of ability as a teacher;

 



' Evidence of activity as a scholar and ability in all other duties assigned;

 



' Successful experience (which will necessarily be waived for those just entering the academic profession who meet all other requirements); and,

 



' Desirable personal qualities judged on the basis of personal interview, complete biographical data, and recommendations.

 



Shift/Salary/Benefits

This position is fiscal year based and works year-round.

The intended work commitment or full-time equivalent (FTE) for this position is 1.0 and considered full-time.

Salary and compensation is commensurate with education, experience, and achievements. The salary is subject to availability of funds.

The educational experience is anchored by the main campus in Augusta, regional clinical campuses for third- and fourth-year students across the state and a second four-year campus in Athens in partnership with the University of Georgia. MCG's expanding partnerships with physicians and hospitals across Georgia currently provides about 350 sites where students can experience the full spectrum of medicine, from complex care hospitals to small-town solo practices.
