Job Description

Under the supervision of the College of Agriculture and Human Sciences (CAHS) Dean and Director of Land Grant Programs, the Associate/Full Professor and Executive Associate Director provides visionary leadership for strategic planning and engagement for the Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) Cooperative Agricultural Research Center (CARC). CARC is an integral component of the 1890 land-grant mission in the State of Texas dedicated to delivering relevant, research-based educational programs designed to empower individuals to improve their quality of life and economic well-being. CARC encompasses all areas of research in the College of Agriculture and Human Sciences such as Animal Systems, Plant Systems, Food Systems, Natural Resource and Environmental Systems and Social Systems and Allied Research. The Associate/Full Professor and Executive Associate Director for CARC is responsible for the strategic direction, oversight, operation and coordination of all research activities as outlined in the approved NIFA Plan of Work. Candidates must be tenure eligible and qualify for a rank of Associate or Full Professor.

Responsibilities:

  • Serves as the chief operating officer for the Cooperative Agricultural Research Center (CARC) to ensure the implementation of the NIFA Plan of Work.
  • Builds and further develops interworking relationships with Extension and Research employees to ensure relevance, impact, and alignment with stakeholder needs.
  • Increases and strengthens mission integration among Research, Extension and Education.
  • Interfaces with the appropriate University and CAHS Leadership on administrative matters, program development, implementation, evaluation, and resource acquisition.
  • Provides transformative leadership, focus, an entrepreneurial spirit and strategic initiatives that direct CARC into the future through progressive, positive change.
  • Coordinates with the Dean and Director of Land Grant Programs in planning and implementation of integrated research programs to meet the objectives of NIFA goals
  • Represents the organization at national, state, TAMUS, and local functions as required and approved.
  • Develops a system for annual needs analysis and a means of integrating and utilizing needs assessment in program development and visioning.
  • Coordinates, supports and encourages cost-effective strategies/methods for professional development of all faculty and staff.
  • Conducts annual performance evaluations for CARC personnel and makes recommendations for improvement or changes as warranted.
  • Provides organizational, strategic, annual, and long-range planning and planning and coordinating with other agencies, organizations, and groups.
  • Seeks additional external funding to expand research initiatives.
  • Interacts closely with the Executive Associate Director for the Cooperative Extension Program, Director of Farm Operations, other administrators within CAHS and at Prairie View A&M University.
  • Assists with the development of funding agreements, comprehensive plans of work, annual reports and strategic planning and implementation.
  • Assists the Dean and Director in developing and monitoring research budgets for Evans-Allen and for research projects.
  • Advises the Dean and Director of Land Grant Programs on policy, programming and related issues affecting the functioning of PVAMU CARC.
  • Promotes the use of digital and other future-oriented technology in the delivery of programs.
  • Initiates and fosters effective relationships, partnerships, collaboration and agreements with academic and other units within the University that have complementary vision, missions and goals to further develop the four-prong vision of teaching, research, service and the farm.



Minimum Education & Experience:

  • Doctorate degree (Ph.D.)
  • Ten (10) years of experience in a relevant field to also include five (5) years of supervisory experience.
  • An academic record (including publications, grants, and teaching and pedagogical contributions) should be such that it merits appointment at the rank of associate or full professor.
  • Strong research record.

  • Effective leadership, managerial, and supervisory skills are essential.
  • The ability to multitask and work cooperatively with others.
  • Excellent customer service, public speaking, and interpersonal skills;.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. Knowledge of communications technology, spreadsheet, and database applications.



Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in a similar position especially in an academic institution.
  • Knowledge of USDA and land grant programs especially as they relate to 1890 institutions, and an understanding of agriculture.
