Position:

The Department of Art & Design at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) is seeking a tenure-track faculty member in Painting/Drawing at the rank of Assistant Professor.

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate level painting and drawing courses, and have a creative practice in contemporary painting and drawing, as a professional working and exhibiting artist. The candidate must have a solid foundation in the technical and conceptual aspects of painting and drawing, and a practice that functions within contemporary art discourse. We seek a candidate with a proven track record of creating artworks and/or programming with content that fosters equity, inclusion, and representation relevant to our diverse student population.

In addition to teaching, the position requires weekly office hours, attending faculty meetings, participation in assessment of student learning, and service to the department, college, and university. The successful candidate will be held to the standards and requirements of the college and department in which he/she/they is/are housed for recommending tenure and promotion. Given CSUN's commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and engagement in a diverse environment, the successful candidate will help the Department achieve equitable academic outcomes for all students through teaching, student mentorship, scholarship, and service.

The faculty member will teach undergraduate through graduate painting and drawing courses, and participate in MFA, MA, and BA programs. Service on Departmental, College, and University committees is required. The faculty member will advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate art majors; develop undergraduate and graduate curriculum; manage facilities and coordinate the painting/drawing area. The faculty member must be a professional working artist active in their field.

Required Qualifications:

  • MFA or terminal degree in painting, drawing or related field from an accredited institution
  • Evidence of successful record of exhibitions and/or creative activities from within the past five years related to the field of painting and/or drawing
  • Creative activity, research and/or service experience that includes working with individuals, groups and/or communities from diverse backgrounds
  • College or University-level teaching experience in painting, drawing or related field, in-person and/or online


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience using culturally responsive pedagogy and approaches to mentoring that leads to equitable outcomes for a diverse student body
  • Ability to teach a range of undergraduate to graduate level painting and drawing courses, including both traditional and contemporary media, technology, and methodologies
  • Experience in, or clear potential for, managing the painting and drawing areas, curriculum/course development, committee service, and work with graduate student
