About the Department:

The Department of Biology is the largest department in the College of Science and Mathematics. It has 35 tenure-track faculty, approximately 1400 undergraduate majors and approximately 70 graduate (MS) students. It provides teaching, research, and learning opportunities in Cell Biology, Physiology (Animal, Plant and Microbial), Marine Biology, Microbiology, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Developmental Biology and Genetics. The department has a strong reputation for excellence in teaching, scholarship and engaging diverse students.

Position:

The department of Biology at California State University, Northridge (CSUN) is seeking TWO tenure-track faculty members in Cell/Molecular Biology and/or Physiology at the rank of Assistant Professor.

The successful candidate will teach a variety of courses that may include: lower division core courses including Biology 107 (Biological Principles II) and upper division core courses including Biology 380 (Cell Biology), and other upper division specialty courses with laboratory components in Cell Biology, Animal Physiology and/or Immunology; and is expected to contribute to course development in their area of expertise. The candidate will have research interests in fundamental cellular processes, including but not limited to, stem cell biology, animal physiology, human physiology, immunology, cancer biology, endocrinology, and should be expected to establish an externally-funded research program that engages undergraduate and Masters student trainees.

In addition to teaching, the position requires weekly office hours, attending faculty meetings, participation in assessment of student learning, and service to the department, college, and university. The successful candidate will be held to the standards and requirements of the college and department in which he/she/they is/are housed for recommending tenure and promotion. Given CSUN's commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and engagement in a diverse environment, the successful candidate will help the Department achieve equitable academic outcomes for all students through teaching, student mentorship, scholarship, and service.

Required Qualifications:

  • A terminal graduate degree (i.e., PhD or equivalent) in cellular/molecular biology disciplines and/or physiology disciplines or a closely related field from an accredited institution,
  • College or University-level teaching experience in-person or online,
  • Demonstrated experience teaching, or expertise relevant for teaching topics covered in Biology 380 (Cell Biology), Biology 476 (Topics in Stem Cell Biology Research), Biology 482 (Animal Physiology), and/or Biology 485 (Immunology) and associated labs,
  • Postdoctoral training,
  • Research productivity as demonstrated by recent publication of peer-reviewed papers in internationally recognized journals of cellular/molecular biology and/or physiology as first authors,
  • Effective communication skills,
  • Evidence of success in mentoring students which may include: publication of research papers with mentee coauthors, mentee research presentations at conferences/symposia, acceptance of mentees into an advanced degree program, or mentee job placement outcomes.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Evidence of effective engagement OR potential to engage with a diverse student body,
  • Experience using culturally responsive pedagogy that leads to equitable outcomes for all students
  • Experience creating a student-centered learning environment,
  • Research/Lab experience that includes working with students from diverse backgrounds,
  • Experience adopting inclusive approaches to mentoring,
  • College or University-level teaching experience, in-person or online, as instructor of record,
  • Demonstrated experience teaching content for, or expertise relevant for teaching, Biology 107 (Biological Principles II) and Biology 380 (Cell Biology) and/or upper-division undergraduate and graduate courses in Cell Biology, Animal Physiology, Stem Cell Biology, or Immunology,
  • Evidence or potential to develop an externally funded research program that engages both undergraduate and graduate (MS) student researchers,
  • Evidence of effective collaboration with colleagues in teaching, research, and/or service activities,
  • Evidence of effective community-based outreach activities.
