Job Description

Job Summary: The Director of Summer Programs designs, develops, and operates comprehensive summer academic programs for the College. The Director is responsible for program design, curriculum development, policy and procedure development, instructor and classroom assistant hiring and training, personnel administration, budget preparation, marketing, and the day-to-day planning and implementation of summer programs, including Summer of Art. The Director is the primary event manager for summer public programs and lectures hosted by Extension. This position reports directly to the Dean of Extension.

• Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate the performance of the Coordinator of Summer Programs, Administrative Assistant(s), and additional temporary and fixed-term summer employee staff.
• Plan and develop program objectives and content.
• Create, develop, and manage curriculum planning and program development, including approving all syllabi, and providing support and guidance for instructors.
• Assess quality of program operations and modify as needed. Develop and implement all processes and procedures for program implementation.
• Implement and manage the day-to-day operations of summer programs including recruitment, applications, facility reservations, daily communications, contracts, and evening support.
• Develop program operating and administrative policies. Direct the dissemination, interpretation, and application of program policies. Authorize exceptions as needed.
• Attend courses and special programs to provide quality assurance, introduce guest speakers, resolve problems, and address areas in need of attention. Participate in divisional program reviews and College-wide assessment and accreditation activities per WASC/WSCUC guidelines.
• Implement and oversee the summer programs project timeline(s).
• Review all summer program participant applications through slide room.
• Work in partnership with the Dean of Extension to develop and cultivate new and existing summer programs. Work with other key constituents as appropriate.
• Collaborate with the Dean of Extension to develop public programs and speaker series for all summer residency programs.
• Initiate a marketing and communications strategy with the Communications Office and the Dean of Extension specific to summer programs.
• Handle day-to-day management of summer programs budgets and reconcile expenses. Work in collaboration with the Dean of Extension to develop summer programs revenue and expenses and make strategic decisions about the selection of summer programs.
• Primary point of contact for all Extension Summer Programs instructors.
• Initiate and implement marketing materials including research, generate copy, edit, and proofread for marketing vehicles as needed (i.e., Summer of Art poster and brochure)
• Represent the College and promote offered programs via visits to high schools, other arts organizations, and professional conferences.
• Serve as a primary contact and resource and provide initial contact and follow-up for students. Respond to requests for information from colleagues, students, parents, educators, and other key constituents.
• Hire, train, and supervise all summer program staff including program assistants, instructors, mentors, program liaisons, speakers, and teaching assistants.
• Serve as the on-call lead staff during all summer program academic events throughout the summer.
• Work in collaboration and coordination with Residence Life and Housing Director around turnover from academic year to summer programs.
• Work in partnership with the Dean of Extension to manage day-to-day student issues and concerns.
• Performs other related duties as assigned. Must be responsive to work-related phone calls and e-mails during non-business hours on occasion.

Preferred and Required Qualifications

Master’s degree preferred and three to five years of progressively responsible experience in an administrative position. Experience working with Residence Life and/or summer conferences and events is desired. Must be a self-starting, hardworking, creative, strategic thinker, capable of managing and expanding summer programs. Excellent leadership, management, program development, and communication skills (both verbal and written) required. Experience with summer conferences and programs is preferred.
