About the Department/College

The College of Health and Human Services is Northern Arizona's hub for inclusive and equitable health and wellness education. With programs available in Flagstaff, online, and at 20+ statewide sites, we prepare high-quality professionals to lend a healing hand.

The Department of Health Sciences, within the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS), is home to some of NAU's fastest growing undergraduate degree programs and currently serves approximately 1,800 undergraduate and graduate students. The department is a true multidisciplinary unit, providing six different undergraduate degree programs in five unique disciplines (Public Health, Nutrition and Foods, Allied Health, Fitness Wellness, and Physical Education Teacher Education), along with the Master of Public Health degree, and an Interdisciplinary Health PhD degree between CHHS and the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. The Health Sciences Department lives its values, emphasizing health and wellbeing for its students, staff, and faculty.

About the Position

The Department of Health Sciences, within the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) at Northern Arizona University, invites applicants to apply for a full-time (9-month) non tenure-track faculty position at the Lecturer (Masters degree required) or Assistant Teaching Professor (Doctoral degree required) level in Fitness Wellness. The position begins August 2024. The successful applicant will have the expertise to teach both residential and online courses on the following topics: Health Coaching Skills, Stress Management, Worksite Wellness.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Teaching load for this position is typically 12 credits (4 courses) per semester.
  • In addition to quality teaching, the successful candidate will be expected to actively participate in Department, College/University, and Community/Professional service.


***This position is an on-site position which requires the incumbent to complete their work primarily at an NAU site, campus, or facility with or without accommodation. Opportunities for remote work are rare.***

9 month, non-tenured track position.

Preferred and Required Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Lecturer Rank -

  • Master's degree in Health Psychology, Health Promotion, Health and Wellness, Public Health or a related field.
  • University or community college teaching experience as the primary instructor of record.


Assistant Teaching Professor Rank -

  • Earned doctoral degree in Health Psychology, Health Promotion, Health and Wellness Public Health, or a related field. (ABD considered).
  • University or community college teaching experience as the primary instructor of record.



Preferred Qualifications

  • Full-time teaching experience in a university setting (online and/or classroom setting) as the primary instructor of record.
  • Professional experience in Health Coaching, Motivational Interviewing, and/or Corporate Wellness.
  • Nationally accredited certification in a wellness area (e.g., National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching, Wellcoaches, American Council on Exercise- Health Coaching).
  • Experience with curriculum design and assessment.
  • Experience working and interacting with people from a wide variety of culturally diverse backgrounds.



Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

The successful applicant will have the expertise to teach both residential and online courses in these content areas: Health Coaching Skills, Stress Management, Worksite Wellness.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of best practices in teaching and learning in traditional and hybrid classroom environments.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Ability to facilitate learning in multiple modalities.

Compensation & Benefits

Anticipated salary range is $67,864 - $72,000. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.

This is a Faculty (FAC) position. NAU offers an excellent benefit package including generous health, dental and vision insurance; participation in the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) or the Optional Retirement Program (ORP); sick leave accruals and 10 holidays per year; and tuition reduction for employees and qualified family members. More information on benefits at NAU is available at the NAU HR benefits page. Faculty are hired on a contract basis, renewable according to terms of the Conditions of Faculty Service. Employees offered a position will be eligible for state health plans (including NAU's BCBS Plan). Employees will have 31 days from date of hire to enroll in benefits, and their benefits will then be effective the first day of the pay period following their completed enrollment. If a new employee chooses the Arizona State Retirement System (ASRS) retirement option, participation in the ASRS Plan (and the long-term disability coverage that accompanies it) will begin on the first of the pay period following 183 days of employment. New employees who choose to participate in the Optional Retirement Plan (ORP; an alternative to the ASRS plan) will begin to participate on the first day of the pay period following election. The long-term disability plan that accompanies the ORP will begin on the first day of the pay period following election. More information about NAU benefits is available at the NAU HR benefits page.

Pre-Employment Check

Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check. Finally, each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.
