Regular/Temporary: Job Summary Spring 2024 Community Assistant Position Description Job SummaryThe Community Leader (CL) is a Gordon State College undergraduate student who serves as a member of the Housing and Residence Life team and is directly supervised by a Resident Director (RD). This position requires the CL to assess and meet the needs of approximately 18 - 30 residents (based on location) through his/her daily interactions with them. The CL job responsibilities and department expectations are divided into four major areas with each having equal value to job performance. As an employee of Gordon State College, the CL is expected to abide by and uphold the Gordon State College Student Code of Conduct, Guide to Highlander Living, Housing and Residence Life policies and procedures, and civil law.
DutiesAdministrative
§ Training: Attend and participate in training workshops, in-service sessions and staff meetings to further develop competencies in meeting the needs and challenges of a residential environment.
§ Duty: Participate in the duty rotation schedule as scheduled by Resident Directors. Duty is daily, including scheduled weekends. Assist with Open House Events, Orientation Events, Admissions/Housing Tours.
§ Reports and Paperwork: Complete forms and reports accurately and in a timely fashion.
§ Emergency response: Provide emergency support as trained or directed. Address and report issues of risk or safety appropriately and in a timely manner.
§ Room inspection: Inspect rooms and common areas as scheduled during Health and Safety inspections and/or rounds to ensure that they are being kept reasonably clean and safe and that no damage has occurred to College property.
§ Check in/Check out: Inspect rooms and apartments for damages before and during resident move-in/out of the room and complete appropriate forms. Community Leaders must participate in building opening and closing responsibilities until the final date of employment/semester.
§ Staff mail: Check staff email daily for information and notices.
§ Office/Room hours: Post Open Room Hours in highly visible places such as the hallway bulletin boards and assigned room doors to inform residents of availability and location.
Community Building
§ Programming: Plan, organize, and inform and conduct programming/activities that help students improve interpersonal, academic, and social skills, develop a sense of community on a residence hall/floor, educate and inform students, involve students in their own learning, provide an outlet for the release of emotion and promote wellness.
§ Policy Enforcement: Know the Gordon State College Student Code of Conduct, Guide to Highlander Living, and Housing and Residence Life policies and procedures well enough to confront and report alleged violations as well as possible consequences resulting from violations of stated policies and procedures.
§ Resident knowledge: Familiarize yourself with the residents and build relationships with residents.
§ Security: Assist in the security of the residence halls by addressing safety and security violations directly.
§ Environment: Encourage and maintain an environment and atmosphere conducive to study. Enhance the academic program by assisting with a study environment.
§ Advisor and Counselor: Advise and properly direct residents both individually and in groups concerning academic, social, and personal issues.

§ Academics: Maintain a minimum cumulative and semester grade point average of 2.0 or higher (2.5 preferred) on all college work.
§ Policies: Adhere to and abide by Residence Hall policies, the Gordon State College Student Code of Conduct, Guide to Highlander Living, CDC/USG pandemic guidelines and civil law.
§ Attitude: Maintain a positive attitude toward the College and the Housing and Residence Life Office. Take an active, constructive role in making changes for the betterment of the Office of Housing and Residence Life and Gordon State College.
§ Balance: Maintain a balance of responsibilities as a staff member, a student, a leader on campus, and a family member.
Team Member
§ Communication: Develop positive and productive relationships with all support/service staff and promote a high level of performance on behalf of all Housing and Residence Life staff.
§ Support: Participate in Residence Life or College committees, staff development and teambuilding as requested or assigned.
§ Feedback and follow-up: Respond in an appropriate and timely manner to all issues and concerns within the residence halls.
§ Liaison: Serve as a liaison to students for Residence Life, the Housing and Residence Life Staff, Gordon State College Public Safety, and other departments on Campus.
Required Qualifications- Must be registered as an undergraduate student at Gordon State College
- Must maintain a cumulative and semester GPA of at least 2.15
- Must maintain good financial and judicial standing within the College
- Must live in the residence halls.
- Must exhibit professional behavior at all times.
- Must abide by all federal, state and local laws
- Must abide by the rules and regulations of Gordon State College Student Code of Conduct and the Guide to Highlander Living
